I purchased two of these magnets recently from a local hardware store to use, specifically, to mount a pair of horns to my head/wig for a cosplay, using them plus a few zinc washers (since, in the store, the magnets attached the strongest to the rainbow-hued zinc more than the stainless steel for whatever reason) because the orientation of the horns on my head makes a headband impractical and they weigh enough to not be viable with hair clips or other mounting methods of that nature and these magnents, boating a 16 lb weight amount limit, seemed like they could be powerful enough to hold my cosplay pieces up.For reference, my horns weigh about 7 oz each and go from the area above my ears to sitting about 2 inches from the center of my forehead (not touching it). They're constructed of tin foil and air dry clay. The ends mounted to my head are thicker/heavier than the other, which taper thinly to points.Sadly, for what I needed these magnets to do, they weren't sufficient and were returned. (Also, in store, these were onky like $2.60 each)You see, these magnets gripped reasonably strong directly to the zinc washers, enough that it took a bit of effort to pry them free and I fully believe that a hook hanging from this could support 16 lbs if attached to like some heavy metal locker or fridge or something like that, but when there's ANYTHING in between the magnet, the connection is significantly weaker. Like, I'm talking some nylon thread around 2 places on the washer so I could attach it to my wig. The two magnets in their package were just barely able to cling to each other through the plastic; direct contact is when it works best, no question.Another issue is that the connection isn't strong enough to fight against gravity completely; my horns could be held up on the washers (not very securely, but if I was still, the magnets at least were capable of holding up their weight) but the front of the horns sank down with the pull of gravity, rather than sitting where I needed them to.Again: my horns are only 7 oz each and these magnets, despite the 16 lb claim, has some instances where the grip just isn't sufficient to hold something up. I think whatever you're putting the magnet on affects it, as well as how the weight is distributed; a hook with something heavy hanging down is probably fine, but if you try to hook something on it against the pull of gravity, the object may make the magnet slide down or twist upon the surface so that the weight of the object points downward like it did with my horns. The magnets have a heavy metal outer casing and are pretty thick (about 1/4 of an inch). I let them snap onto my zinc washers and they didn't crack or anything, so they appear to be pretty sturdy. For most people I assume my review probably isn't super helpful, but hopefully if you're a cosplayer, this will be helpful if you're looking for cheap magnets from a local store to use in a costume.
