It felt and looked sharp, but I couldn't cut with it. I have some really cheap lathe tools that cost less than $30. I used the gouge from that set to do my work. I have resharpened the gouge, but the angle must be wrong because it still doesn't cut.

This is a very well built gouge, sharp out of the box

Out of the box the tool had a reasonable edge and cut well and after a few passes on a CBN Fine wheel the cut is very smooth and holding well through several small projects. I run the lathe area in a makerspace and wanted to try this tool to see how it performs. The first user of the tool was a second time turner and they found it very easy to balance yielding a smooth surface. Next up was myself roughing out an end grain block where it performed well. Third user was also a new turner who did roughing and general shaping with great results. All of these operations were accomplished without any need for further sharpening.

I am upgrading my lathe chisels and don't want to break the bank. Based on the 1" round nose scraper reviews, I purchased the 1" spindle roughing gouge. This is my first true spindle roughing gouge as I have been using a 1" carbon steel spindle gouge to rough turn my spindle blanks (lots of sharpening). The UF-Sharp gouge was well packaged in a plastic tube with foam at each end and in an Amazon cardboard box. Out of the tube, I have to say the handle was comfortable but the gouge did not appear to be very sharp resulting in a lot of chatter on harder woods such as Osage Orange and Peruvian rosewood. Due to the lack of sharpness out of the tube, I dinged the product by one star. I sharpened the gouge on a 6" pink Aluminum oxide wheel mounted on a Delta high speed grinder (had not received my 320 grit CBN wheel yet). After sharpening, the gouge cut much better. When my 320 grit CBN wheel arrived, I touched up the gouge but have not yet had the opportunity to see how sharp it is. Will report back after my next spindle turning project.

It’s a nice rougher, holds a edge for a long time.
