Why is 18-8 stainless steel or 304 stainless steel magnetic?

  • The acquisition of weak magnetic properties in 18/8 and 304 stainless steels post-precision processing is attributed to the microstructural alterations induced during such operations. Both these stainless steels are variants of austenitic stainless steel, primarily composed of iron, 18% chromium, and 8% nickel. Inherently, austenitic stainless steels exhibit non-magnetic characteristics.
  • However, during cold working processes such as bending, stamping, cutting, or other forms of mechanical deformation, the austenitic microstructure undergoes partial transformation. This transformation leads to the emergence of martensitic or ferritic phases within the steel, both of which are magnetic in nature.
  • Furthermore, thermal fluctuations inherent in processing techniques can also promote the austenitic to martensitic phase transition. This phenomenon is further exacerbated by stress-induced martensitic transformation, where the applied pressure during processing facilitates this phase shift.
  • Consequently, the once non-magnetic austenitic stainless steel begins to exhibit weak magnetic properties due to the presence of these newly formed martensitic regions. It is important to note that this magnetism is typically feeble and does not compromise the chemical properties or corrosion resistance of the material. The occurrence of magnetism in these stainless steels, following processing, is a physical alteration and should not be misconstrued as a material defect.
  • It is crucial to be cautious of stainless steel products that do not exhibit weak magnetism after precision processing, as they may potentially be made of 201 stainless steel. 201 stainless steel is a type of austenitic stainless steel with low nickel(approximately ranging from 3.5% to 5.5%) and high manganese content. Due to its lower nickel content, it is relatively less expensive, but correspondingly, it has inferior corrosion resistance and weldability compared to higher nickel austenitic stainless steels, such as 304 or 18-8 stainless steel. Therefore, using a magnet to test stainless steel is not a scientifically valid method.

#10 is the head size as far as the tool is concerned, although I am told T25 is the bit required's name. The problem is solved by buying these here with just the same quality as the hardware store. At the store the "No.8 X 1.26 Length Multipurpose Screw" and you put the T25 bit in and bam, too small. This screw is listed as "No.10 X 1.26 Length Multipurpose Screw" and the same bit size, titled T25 can be used as well as with every other screw used, which is a necessity here and this is so great to eliminate the need for multiple tool sizes for shorter screws only stocked in No. 8's so apparently t25 no.8 is a smaller size bit than these here t25 no.10.

I use them for securing to wood that I am turning. The coating started wearing off after the first use. Otherwise they work fine

Ah, the glamorous world of hardware, where the humble screw has been reinvented with stainless steel swagger and a black oxide tuxedo. The TPOHH #10 x 1-1/4" Flat Head Torx Wood Screws are here to remind you that even the smallest parts of your project can be unnecessarily fabulous—and frustrating.Let’s start with the good stuff. These screws are tough, with sharp points that dive into wood like synchronized swimmers. They come with a T25 Torx bit, sparing you the joy of digging through your toolbox only to realize you didn’t own one. And the corrosion-resistant coating? Perfect for ensuring your outdoor deck stays stylishly fastened, even if the weather has other plans. Now for the snags. The Torx head is... shallower than your least favorite reality TV star. If you’re not perfectly aligned, expect a few screws to pirouette off your drill bit mid-installation, especially since stainless steel laughs in the face of magnetism. This is less fun when you’re perched on a ladder. Bonus frustration: they arrive in a plastic bag, because who needs organization when you can play “find the screw” every time you start a project?Bottom line? These screws are overachievers that need a bit of finesse to use. Perfect for the DIYer who wants durable hardware—and a little drama.

I recently had the opportunity to evaluate the 100 PCS #10 x 1-1/4" Flat Head Torx/Star Wood Screws, and I was thoroughly impressed with their quality. These stainless steel screws are expertly crafted, featuring a non-magnetic and rust-resistant design with a protective coating for extended longevity.Key Features and Performance• Easy to Start : The sharp points on these screws made it effortless to start them in wood, although you might need to take the precaution of pre-drilling holes.• Torx Head : While the Torx head is slightly shallower than some other brands, this minor inconvenience did not detract from my overall satisfaction with the product.• Driving Experience : I found it necessary to start each screw with a hand screwdriver before finishing with a cordless driver, as the magnetic bit holder had trouble gripping them securely.• Exceptional Performance : Despite this, the screws performed exceptionally well in various home projects, including visible applications like slat wall panels.• Damage-Free Installation : They pierce fabric-covered surfaces without causing damage and maintain a straight path into the wood, reducing the risk of crooked installation.Additional Features and Suggestions• Included Torx Bit : The included Torx bit is a thoughtful addition that keeps everything organized and within reach.• Packaging : My only suggestion for improvement would be to upgrade the packaging from a resealable plastic bag inside a cardboard box to a dedicated resealable plastic container for greater convenience.ConclusionIn summary, if you're in the market for high-quality Torx-headed screws that are reliable and easy to work with, I highly recommend giving these a try. They're an excellent choice for any project that requires durable hardware. With their excellent threads that sink easily into wood without stripping, even when used with an impact driver, these screws are sure to meet your expectations.
