First off I am a Fiber Optic Engineer and Consultant, the truth is because of Physics, no VFL at 635-65nm will ever go more that about 5km (DONT LOOK DIRECTLY AT LASERS with a camera, you can see in tiny speck of light at 7km, but not usable). First off 635 loses about 6dB/km, 80mw is 19dBm so expectation is about 3km of reach.Somewhere somebody equated 1mw with 1km which isn't true. A less expensive VFL of 20-30mw will be as good as a 100mw VFL. Don't believe it? Look up "Absorbtion" in fiber optics, it will help.

The build quality is sturdy and the slide control has positively clicks into position. The casing is of solid aluminum and should last a lifetime of use. I uses AA batteries that it doesn't come with, and it also does not come with any adapters for different fiber types. All in all, I think that it is a decent VFL. I rather doubt the 100km claim, but I have no way to test it. I can say, the light intensity is significantly better than the the other 30 and 50 mW VFLs that I have used in the past, but I am not sure that it is worth the significant extra cost.

I haven't been able to test the long range claims of this product but I have tested up to 500M of fiber. I have tested it with SC and LC connectors and it does what it should you can confirm that the connection is complete. The device uses 2 AA which are not included which is fine but again for the price it seems like it should.There are a few downsides to this unit. For the price it seems cheaply made. The yellow on off slider does not operate well and it doesn't have that satisfying click between the 3 modes and you will often turn it on by accident. It doesn't feel like a well made switch either and it may not hold up over time. For this price it should include an adapter for LC connectiors and it doesn't ship with one. Finally the twist cap on the bottom for the batteries can be hard to turn and the metal feels like it could get stuck. I added a little lube to keep it moving smoothly.
