Would have been five stars if the weight was accurate. It came saturated with water which added 0.6 lb. Once dry, it weighs 9.4 lb.

It’s a very fine mix of lava rocks. So don’t be surprised at how small the granules are. And they need to be rinsed off. But once it’s rinsed, it’s good to go. I have a very heavy watering hand. I like to water my plants everyday to every other day (they’re in a greenhouse). The aroids love it. They grow fast. The rocks retain moisture; but prevents overwatering.

I used it for my 10 gallon planted shrimp tank (I still have to add the shrimp) but I mean so far it’s helping my plants stay healthy.

I will definitely rebuy these black lava rocks!! I love the small size. They are a perfect size for adding to my succulent soil. Could also be a good top dressing. I have had a hard time finding this size. They are usually way too big to amend soil and always end up floating up to the top of the pot eventually. Not with this size though. They are perfect. Im really happy that I found them.

I have two uses for this, so it's a good thing there is so much of it. First, I add this to the bottom of my succulent pots (about an inch depending on the succulents pot size) to help with drainage. Most of the pots come with little pieces of screen to help keep the rocks and dirt in, but screening isn't hard to come by. I drop the screening in, put in the lava rocks, add my succulent mix and plants. Done. Second use is decorative. I burn a lot of candles, and I have a lot of holders. I have a nice sized saucer that I'd like to put some candles in, but I need something to anchor them in, that's what the rest of the lava mix is for. So far so good, it's working like it should. Do be careful if you're decorating with it though, it can scratch any finished surfaces. Otherwise, no issues, it drains like it should, and my plants are super healthy. Plus I have plenty left for more plants or decor.

I get terrible light in my house so it's all the more important that I have a great, well draining soil mix. I have a bunch of succulents & I'm always playing with cactus/succulent pre mixes, adding perlite, sand, etc. I'm finding I like to add lava rocks in too. For a long time I'd add them just to the bottom, maybe the top too for more decorative purposes but they seem to improve soil conditions mixed throughout as well.My soil tends to clump but adding these has aided in better/quicker drainage without sacrificing any needed moisture. The size of the bag is great too. I wasn't using it sparingly at first & I added it to at least a dozen plants worth & I barely went through a quarter of the bag. The price is pretty on par with similar sized bags I've seen online as well (it's currently listed at $15.99/5 lb. bag).

I wanted these specifically to top off one of my current plants, and I'm so happy with the results! It's a green succulent in a white container, so the rocks give a really nice, tidy, professional-looking finish. I was concerned that they would move while I was watering, but thankfully everything stayed in place. I will say that in the bag they look like a very dark black color, but changed to more of a dusty black or even gray the day after adding them to the pot. And to be fair, I can't speak to the drainage properties as I'm not mixing them in with the soil or using them as a base at the bottom of the container. But I'm very happy with how they look on top!

Adding this lava rock to some of my potting mix to prevent compaction and hope it will also aid in water retention. this would also be useful as a top dressing to prevent soil from being washed away/disturbed while watering your plants this is probably what most people would use it for as I may also. I have some bonsai plants the soil is always washing out when I water them and this would help to keep it in place while watering. the size of this lava is on average 5mm and it is black in color
