Not cheap, but a high quality tool. With a light "thwack" it will securely pick up a piece of firewood either at the end grain or on the side, and with a little push will release it again. The harder the "thwack", the more secure the grip and the more push needed to dislodge it.

I burn about 3 cords of wood per winter, and with oil prices where they are, that’s only going to increase. I’ve been burning for 23 years, and never even heard of a Pickaroon until recently, when I finally bought my first wood splitter. It took me about 2 minutes to discover what a great tool this is for handling firewood. It’s really amazing how much easier it makes to handle the wood. Listen to me carefully: If you are burning any volume of firewood, you need one of these. Get one. Right now. I’m kicking myself thinking about how much effort (and back pain, and work gloves) this would’ve saved me in the past 23 years. I can’t imagine ever having to replace it. Top quality construction, and a great value. I can’t say enough good things about this tool. Get one!EDIT: Don’t buy this if you expect any support from Garrett Wade, the manufacturer. I had the point break off, (which should’ve lasted many years) and when I contacted them they said “Too bad. You bought it from Amazon, so contact them with your complaints. Fine. I’ll never buy ANY Garrett Wade product again.

The tip just snapped off trying to pick up a log. Amazing replacing now hope it was just a bad unit

It appears to be well made and it does work very well, but a longer handle would work even better for me. Somewhere around 20 inches would be good but I haven't found one yet.
