Side light fiber optic material works a little differently than standard fiber optic. Standard fiber optic works sort of like a water hose, but using light instead of water. Light from an LED or some such light source is shined out one end, and the light comes out of the other end of the fiber optic, even if the fiber optic cable is rolled and twisted, etc. It is perfect for adding point lights (for example, simulating windows in a miniature or model.)Side light fiber optic does work much the same way, however, it is usually thicker and much of the light entering one end shines out the sides of the fiber optic cable. This type can be used in several different ways, for example, running a single line of light along a dark hallway, or to add mood lighting in a swimming pool. (The optic fiber itself can be immersed in water, however, the LED or whatever light source must be made waterproof before getting wet.) It can be used to light special areas of costumes, "energy" pipes on a model spacecraft... I've even seen people use it to simulate lightning outside a window in a 'haunted house' style doll house. This PMMA Side Light optic fiber works as well or even better than some I've seen and used in the past. The fiber itself is 2mm in diameter, which is rather large as fiber optics go. I'm using it to add glowing light pipes on the engine areas of a scratch-built spacecraft model for movie production. So far, it is perfect. You get just about 11 1/2 feet of 2mm optic fiber at a great price; $6.96 at the time of this review.I use a lot of fiber optic material in my work, and I've seen so many good and bad fiber optic products. I can honestly say that this is some of the best I've used.
