I could not figure this out at all. Instructions would have helped. It is just such a waste to put locks with no way of using them

Absolutely NO instructions of any kind!! But I figured how to set my own 4 digit code in about 45 seconds. It comes with the default 0000 unlock code. Pull lock apart and twist the end about 1/4 turn until it stops. Set numbers to your desired code and then turn the end back 1/4 turn. Done. Stretchy and fairly compact. Fits in the palm of your hand.
