I was unhappy that these stones have no rounded surfaces to use on an inward curving blade, like a billhook or Japanese kama (sort of a mini-sickle). For years I've used a grinder, followed by an old Arkansas oil-stone, to sharpen kamas. But I couldn't use the grinder on the tight curve of a new billhook. Time to find something new. These stones seemed like a good approach.Well...not so much. The stones both arrived in one piece (good), and are of a hard, durable agregate (very good), so they should last a long while. But there is not one rounded surface. Oh, they ARE canoe-shaped, narrow at both ends, wide in the middle, so there is a CURVE to the sides, but the corners are hard 90° angles, so there's nothing to fit against the tight curve at the end of the billhook.I was also disappointed that they were such a coarse grit (I'd guess about 180?). However, I'm of two minds here, so I can't grade them down too much. I had one kama whose blade had a couple of large nicks and a badly damaged point (hard hit on a rock). Using one of these stones with oil, it was great for quickly taking out the nicks, grinding off the bent point, and giving an overall sharp (if rough) edge. As usual, I followed with a good oil stone, and the blade was super sharp. So for an initial grind, the grit is appropriate.I've also heard that when you're sharpening a large tool, like a scythe, you actually WANT a coarser grit, to give the blade a slightly ragged, saw-tooth edge. I wouldn't know -- but if that's true, this stone would likely be perfect. However, if you want to put a really fine, keen edge on your blades, you'll need to follow up with something else. One final mitigating factor - as I use these stones on inward curving blades, over time they will wear down at the corners, where they contact the metal, and sooner or later I will actually have the rounded surface that I wanted in the first place. Japanese saying - turn poison to medicine.

These arrived smashed to bits. These are very fragile stones and shouldn't be shipped in a box containing two stones.

Easy to maneuver onto the cutting edge when the tool can't be disassembled. These stones did a good job on my Gardening shears.
