Sorby 289-2-3/8 Timber Framers Slick. A massive 2-3/8" wide chisel designed for cleaning up uneven surfaces on very large projects, particularly timber frames and in boat building. Made to be pushed rather than struck, their qualities of weight and balance help produce a very fine but accurate cut, and the handles are off-set from the blades to give extra clearance - whether working on deep mortises or taking long paring cuts The blades are produced from high carbon alloy steel for the perfect balance of hardness, toughness, and razor edge holding ability. The working face is machine ground in order to produce a slightly hollow surface for ease of honing while the back face is rounded off along its length to eliminate sharp corners and increase user comfort and safety. The contoured ash handle is attached to the blade with the combination of a heavy duty tang and an innovative socket for exceptional strength. Each slick has an overall length of 27-28". England Model: F28960G

When I got the tool, I didn't have time to sharpen it before use and I hoped it was at least reasonably sharp. It certainly exceeded my expectations. Not only was the back perfectly flat but the chisel was quite sharp. Also, the seller, Hartville hardware was extremely helpful after the sale answering my question as to what the bevel angle was.Great Product and Great Seller.

I have purchased a myriad of timber framing tools over the last several years to use in my foray into timber framing. I have found the Robert Sorby line of chisels and slicks to be a great value in price to performance ratio. Like the great performance I've come to appreciate from my tools, I also want to give accolades to the phenomenal customer service of Taylor Toolworks. I have never had to return a chisel, slick, or any other tool from them. They pack all their tools extremely well for the torturous journey through the parcel delivery systems. Every since the onset of the pandemic, customer service has unilaterally gone to pot. I am fed up with poor customer service and hearing every excuse in the world why the pandemic has caused it. If you're tired of experiencing the same, give Taylor Toolworks a try. I am not employed by, or affiliated with Taylor Toolworks and this is an unsolicited review of both the great Sorby slick and an awesome tool supplier.

Everything anyone could ask for in a slick. I anticipate passing this along when the time comes

Seems to be machined from a solid steel billet, even with the cranked neck for knuckle clearance. Lacks the soul of a hand forged tool, but it’s made to precise tolerances. Back is machined almost dead flat and just needs a bit of polishing. Almost ready to go right out of the box. When honed and stropped, cuts like a beast.

I own the larger slick F28985G (aka #289 - 3-3/8) as well. This one is much easier to manage. The back on both were ground dead flat. Honing the edge (an expected task) was not very tedious and the slick holds its edge well paring oak. This size would be what I'd recommend as a first purchase.

Good slick. Sheffield steel, good quality wood handle. Does NOT arrive well honed.

This is a beautiful tool. As stated, it definitely does not come well honed. This, however, is not unexpected. Very thick steel, sturdy handle, and expected craftsmanship.
