I’m not sure what I was expecting with this. There is a little skill that is required to cut polystyrene. This only comes with the foam cutter as shown. The hot wire cutter required breaks as it seemed to stop working as smoothly. You’ll be able to tell when it needs a rest. I would only use this outdoors in a well ventilated area.

This hot wire, or hot needle as I consider it, works reasonably well once you learn how best to use it. For me that involved employing a slow sawing motion to maintain even cutting. My impression is that the needle is so small in diameter, it can’t maintain the necessary temperature if you continue cutting using the same area, and it begins to bog down. A gentle forward and backward action consistently exposes the material to a section of the needle that’s had a chance to heat up – providing that the material isn’t the full length of the needle, which wasn’t my use case.I can’t say if the tool’s inability to “keep up” is a flaw or just a result of its simplicity. This is yet another tool, like plastic welders, where variable power/temperature is probably called for. I noticed that it was more effective on dense pink foam insulation than on lighter white packing foam, where it was hot enough to cause the material to retreat quickly and unevenly. I had to use a slower version of the sawing technique to control the cutting effect, with mixed results.I also withheld points, as I am often compelled to do with anything that plugs in and especially produces heat, because neither the tool nor the DC power supply is certified for safety and performance by a third party such as UL or ETL.
