Many homes have switched outlets where the top plug is powered by a switch on the wall. This is typically done to plug a lamp into the outlet for illuminate the room where there isn't an overhead light. It is common for these outlets to be upside down to indicate that it is a switched outlet.The difference between this device and ones that look essentially the same is that the top outlets are independent of the bottom. If you were to use one where all six outlets are ganged together, the outlet extender would do the job. But it wouldn't matter whether the wall switch was on or off. All the plugs would be live. If, on the other hand, you want more outlets for the switched plug and wanted to maintain use of the wall switch, this is the device you want. You would have three plugs that go on with the switch. The other three would be live all the time. This device is perfect for that situation.Also, the plug fits snugly into the wall. Moreover, each of the plugs readily accepts and retains a plug without having to force the plug in and it is snug so that the plug doesn't fall out. Beware of those where reviews indicate these problems. Typically cheaper. This one doesn't have that problem.

One of these outlets sparks when I plug anything in. Which is odd, because 5 out of the 6 work just fine. I’ve only ever had 3 things plugged in at once, but aside from the one outlet I’ve learned to avoid, this has worked fine for its intended purpose.

I like it has 2 plugs, so it holds solid into a standard outlet. If the outlet is split in 2, then the top 3 plugs would be 1 circuit and the bottom 3 the other circuit. Wish they made this with a couple Usb. Guess nothing is perfect. This is great for areas like the kitchen, where you plug/unplug a lot. So you do not where out the actual wall plug.

We live in a newly built house. In every room the upper electric outlet is always hot, but the bottom electrical unit is regulated by the light switch as you enter the room and only works when the switch is on. With those other units that have only one set of plug in the back it doesn’t work with how our house is wired. With these that have 2 different plug in the back it works perfectly. I threw the other ones I purchased away and went to all of these in the rooms I needed them. Very happy with my purchase.

Basic outlet extender. All 6 outlets work and it stays securely in place hanging from the ceiling. Plugs in to both outlets, not just one like many others do these days.Just needed a basic extender in the garage - didn't need to pay for surge protection or USB inputs.
