This kit is all about controlling light when photographing and videoing. It consists of a folding frame with an elastic band inside that pulls it into shape, a 4 in 1 reflector and a translucent diffuser. The reflector, with white, gold and silver sides and a black flag, fits on the frame like a sock. To access all four sides you have to pull the sock inside out. The reflectors reflect light onto the subject to soften the lighting effect and the flag blocks light. The diffuser is a single sheet that hooks over the frame to spread light that shines through it.The frame is thirty by thirty five which is appropriate for portraits. To use this, you also need a light stand or, preferably, a C stand, and a grip head to hold the device. Sandbags are probably a wise idea.Be careful when you open it up to note where the elastic bands that hold the frame together are placed for when you fold it up again and get a grip on both parts of the frame. The first time I removed the bands I narrowly avoided injury as the two parts snapped into place.Because of the curved corners, it is a little difficult to slip the diffuser on. Start by closing Velcro fasteners around the sides first and then slipping on the elastic corners.I find the device useful for softening a main light: reflectors by reflecting the light into the shadows, the flag by blocking light and the diffuser by standing between the subject and the light. The folding frame makes it convenient to carry in the provided bag.

The Tenbest Flag Kit represents a legitimately convenient means of light control; its portable, very light weight and relatively easy to setup. I say “relatively” because I found it awkward initially until I got the hang of it. The elasticized joints can flop around until they’re fixed. The frame itself is quality stainless tubing with some pretty clean welding at the joints, specifically at the areas around the center post; the corners look as if they’re done with a pipe bender. One word of advice: make note of how the frame is folded and secured when it’s delivered, before unfolding it for the first time. I spent a frustrating ten minutes trying to figure that out. And for the life of me I still can’t figure out how the two elasticized ball bands used to hold the folded frame together are fitted, they seem way to small in all the ways I’ve tried them. There must be a magic trick involved.Running through the steel tubing of the frame is elastic banding. When the frame is let loose, it snaps into its rectangular shape, ready to use. Four opaque surfaces are encompassed within the frames slip on cover: gold, black, white and silver, all accessed by turning the cover inside out to one side or the other. The diffuser, on the other hand, is stretched over the frame, then held with Velcro style adhesion strips. I found that the easiest way to get it on is by first securing the eight hook and loop tabs around the frame, then stretching the corners on.At the outset, an important consideration to be made is by what means the Flag will be secured within the working environment. It’s large enough that handholding it is unwieldy. Whether in the studio or outdoors, ideally, to take full advantage of the Tenbest Flag Kit, a C-Stand, along with two clamps and an extension arm is required; basically, the way flags are usually setup. And don’t forget a sandbag to go with it, especially outdoors; securing a flag in a windy environment is nearly impossible by any means. Now the kit isn’t so light. The other consideration that comes to mind is what happens when the frame’s inner elastic wears out or snaps, which it inevitably will. In my opinion, the user is still left with a usable, still portable frame. It may even be more convenient; wait till you try refolding it. In other words, it should still serve as a useful flag frame kit, since its efficacy is by no means dependent on the elastics. While assembled, with or without the elastic, its structural integrity is maintained by the enveloping reflector material. All in all, the Tenbest is a very useful kit for controlling light, directing it to go where its wanted and blocking it where it isn’t. Even the diffuser, when mounted, can be used to model light by pulling the opaque reflector envelope only partially over it, perhaps to let light on the main subject while blocking it from the background, thereby creating the soft effect of northerly light. Or the opposite can be done by placing the diffuser over the gold or silver surfaces to soften them. Of course, it’s a handy reflector, used in the studio or outdoors. And the black surface is useful for figurative light modeling, creating shape with shadows. In addition, all of the materials used both for the frame and the reflectors appears to be of good quality. Let me reiterate through: be sure to think through how to secure the frame within the context of any given working methodology. A lighting flag is unwieldy if not properly fastened down.Besides the frame and reflectors, the kit includes a carrying case. No separate bags are provided fore the diffuser and reflector, but when folded, they fit handily into a large Ziplock bag. On the whole, in the short time I've used, I don't have any criticisms of the kit.

I mainly got this flag kit for the black flag. Before this kit, I was using a large piece of black corrugated cardboard to absorb light spill, so this kit is definitely an upgrade (plus it looks a lot more professional than cardboard). The scrim is a great extra for me and is now getting a lot of use even though it was not my intended use of this kit.In the kit, you get a stainless steel square frame, a bag, a four in one reflector/flag, and a scrim. The stainless steel frame is a good size for my needs. It has an extension rod to attach it to a light stand. The frame is held together by elastic cording (like the poles for a tent). This elastic cording is the one thing that I took a star off for as I’m not certain this will survive over time with frequent setups and tear downs like I do. I haven’t had any issues, yet, so time will tell. I would prefer if the stand maybe locked together with button locks (like a backdrop rod does). The four in one reflector/flag is nicely made. I have other reflectors that I prefer, so I don’t see me using those, too much, but nice to have a backup set. The black flag, however, is perfect for my needs and I’m mainly using it in table top photography. The scrim is also a great item and I am finding that I like it better than a diffuser in some situations.I like that everything folds down neatly into a small portable bag.
