What is the Brake Proportioning Valve ?

The brake proportioning valve is located in the brake system for the rear wheels. It functions to control the brake fluid pressure from the master cylinder in response to the vehicle load. It limits the pressure sent to the rear brakes and prevents early locking of the rear wheels. This provides directional stability under hard braking. Should the hydraulic system to the front brakes fail, the pressure control for the rear brakes is cancelled and sufficient braking force is provided.

The main symptom the proportioning valve is going bad is the rear wheels locking up and the front wheels turn normally when the brakes are applied. Furthermore, the wheels will lock up more easily on wet surfaces. The rear brakes may feel touchy when applied even gently. The proportioning/conditioning valve is an important part of the braking system, if you sense valve is failing or not operating properly that impacts your brake balance, you need to replace a new valve.

The following are the brief steps to install the brake proportional valve (for reference only.)

Raise the front of the vehicle using a jack. Secure the vehicle with jack stands on both sides for safety

Locate the brake proportioning valve and remove it from the vehicle.

Disconnect the wiring harness for the brake fluid warning light switch and all hard brake lines connected to the valve.

Unbolt and remove the proportioning valve from its mount. Install the new valve and tighten the mounting bolts.

Locate the brake bleeder valve on the rear brake.

Install a piece of clear plastic tubing over the brake bleeder screw and place the other end into a container with 2 to 3 inches of brake fluid.

Have an assistant pump and hold the brake pedal to build up pressure in the system.

Loosen the bleeder screw. Allow for brake fluid to evacuate through the bleeder screw opening.

Tighten or close the bleeder screw. Repeat the bleeding process until there is no more air bubbles coming out.

Always wear safety glasses when working on your vehicle. Wear personal protective equipment when necessary.

Installed this on my 98 Toyota Tacoma and it works! I was skeptical because of the price and brand. I had the common problem with this truck of the oem lspv valve going bad and loosing rear breaks. Would buy again and recommend for you.
