I'm in my 70's, and have been playing clarinet since 7th grade. I have been using a different style of thumb rest pad for as long as I can remember.I saw these and decided to give them a try. I don't think I'll end up using them, but will keep them in case I lose my old one.I'm not saying they are bad, and I would encourage you to give them a try if you are looking for a thumb cushion.I don't feel that the little flat piece is necessary. These are thicker than what I'm used to, and the corner seems to dig into my thumb's knuckle.I'm sure I'd get used to them if I played with them on my horn every day for a few years, but I don't plan to.

As a professional clarinetist, I'm always looking for good products for myself and my students. Thumb pads are a must for me, and these deliver. While I wouldn't use these onstage (blue doesn't look particularly professional), they are perfectly functional and the pad is nice and thick. The flap the extends down the back of the clarinet isn't typical of other pads. I didn't find having it any more or less useful, but it's easy enough to cut it off if you don't like it. If nothing else, it may protect the wood on your clarinet from the oils in your hands.
