I really appreciate SSL making a 500 series channel strip for $399. I think that is a fair price for a nice channel strip. Does it compete with my X 73i? No, but it still very usable and does shine on overheads. I bought a pair of them and use them on my overheads. Tap the eq’s a bit, a touch of compression used with my earthworks sound great.

I wouldn't say it has no color. It's not transparent. It adds a degree of richness to the signal that otherwise wouldn't be there. It's just a classy sound. A must have!

I was looking for a good preamp for mobile recording in my luncbox and this went on sale for 299. The features, on paper, looked liked it covered majority of tracking essentials i.e phantom power, LPF, shelving EQ and low ratio compressor. In use, it matched well with my Rode NTG3 shotgun mic and the sound, especially with the comp engaged, was quite impressive. When followed by a limiter and de-esser, vocals sounded good. It does not have a pad which I think would have the unit even more useful for a microphone that has no built in pad.Overall, as an audio producer, I like the foundation sound that this unit is able to aid aquire. As long as your recording device/interface/converter is high quality, this unit won't disappoint. This is as very good Mic pre/channel strip at a good price.

This is a great all around channel strip. It is a transformer less mic pre with no color which is great to have in the arsenal. All SSL stuff is top notch and sounds great.
