A camshaft sprocket is a cylindrical engine component, with teeth machined along the outer edge. It's attached to one end of the camshaft and connected to the crankshaft sprocket by a timing chain or belt. When the camshaft sprocket rotates, the camshaft revolves and the cam lobes open and close the engine valves. Camshaft sprockets help maintain the timing between the crankshaft and the camshaft.
A sprocket (or a timing gear) converts the linear movement of the chain into a rotatory motion of the component to which it is attached. In the camshaft system, it is responsible for the acceleration of the crankshaft, camshafts, balance shafts, the oil pump and other engine accessories. In time, these sprockets wear down or lose teeth, which can cause your timing chain to skip and potentially cause catastrophic damage to your engine.
