These are inexpensive calipers ideal for throwing in the junk drawer for occasional use. While probably meant for student use, these are great for around the house when you need to see the diameter of a hole, the depth of a hole, or the measurement of any gap between two surfaces. With the premise this is essentially a disposable tool, it fits the role of an occasional use tool very well. The only downside to this is that I wish the friction between the head and the body was a bit stiffer, or there was some sort of (slight) friction lock. It is very easy to move the head when reading the face. However, it is a good little tool for quick and dirty measurements. If you want true precision, drag out a Starrett mike.

These are hard plastic, but not some kind of high stiffness plastic like glass-reinforced nylon or anything like that. The calipers are reasonably accurate. I measured several precision tool bits and other items of known dimensions, and got values I was expecting. The hatch marks, both standard and vernier, are clear and easy to read. The jaws will deform if you squeeze them, so you can only apply light finger pressure or your measurements will be off by several tenths of a mm. Any more than finger tight, and the measurement will visibly change. The depth plunger is very light plastic and deforms easily. But, you get 2 for $8, and that's a pretty good deal for something you can keep in your toolbox to do quick measurements. I wouldn't use these to blueprint an engine, but they're fine for checking the size of fasteners and tools, or laying out marks for carpentry and that sort of thing.
