If u don't know nothing about music, this might just teach u the names of things. But then it lacks details in many things of playing,it will be worth it if it was 1/4 of the price. It not bad but it's also not useful since it doesn't take it's time to teach you in detail.

The excercises are very helpful for practicing, but I wish it talked a bit more about posture and bowing technique; I feel like I'm learning to play the notes just fine but I'm not so sure about the form...

I loved it as a 5 year old nonspeaker of English and well, I love it now as a middle aged person, did I say that, as I review the book. The full picture of the finger keys is really all its missing; however, it's very well presented separately cord by cord so you'll learn fast and it's a magical experience for everyone. The full picture of the keys with everything labelled you can get from your teacher as you progress through the bookor in class or even your local music club. As I recall, I was first introduced at 3 or 4 or perhaps younger to the violin at a local childrens music club while the adults played children songs. One of the most memorable experience. You will find that you will progress fast and efficiently through the book alone but you're in good hands with the DVD that accompanies the book (yes, 2 DVD's...am I bragging 2 DVD's). If you're type A...you may need to refer to a teacher or friend for finger work or can go online...if you don't like to wait to course through the lessons. LOVE THE BOOK! It's EXCELLENT. Check with your local music store and see if they too offer lessons and overlap them, but that you don't need to do...there are also many online courses too to supplement all three...always a need to supplement the first source and the required courses even in college. With ABC's of Violin alone...everyone will do GREAT....even without making many references at all...the book is meant to self sustain and contain the student to manageable short lessons that scalfold learning up and to the very end...it is user friendly and manageable. You'll be playing songs in no time...as most of the songs are songs we've heard before. ABC's of Violin by Janice Tucker Rhoda is EXCELLENT and made for everyone. Don't get confused. It is a complete violin course. THE GOAL IS TO FOCUS ON THE SONG AND NOTES SHE'D LIKE YOU TO LEARN AND THE SONGS ARE NOT PREDICTABLE TO COMPLEMENT A COMPLETE CHALLENGING BRAIN LEARNING EXPERIENCE...EDUCATION AND FOOD FOR THE BRAIN. THE SONGS LIKE ANY ORCHESTRA CAN BE PLAYED IN MANY DIFFERENT WAYS HOWEVER THERE ARE PREFERENCES WHILE YOU CAN MAKE THE SUIT YOUR NEEDS...EACH SONG COMES WITH RECOMMENDATIONS. AND THAT'S THE WAY IT WAS IN ELEMENTARY SCHOOL ORCHESTRA...YAH, ORCHESTRA FOR CHILDREN GET THAT...LOVE IT.

I decided to learn the violin. I searched for good books and I decided to check out this series. I appreciate the fact that they put two volumes into one. And I was super excited about the DVDs - I am learning by myself which means I like seeing how to actually hold the violin, etc.The material is arranged quite well and it has a lot of practice material. I particularly enjoyed the fact that the music proposed is not all like "Twinkle-twinkle" ( I am a grown up, after all). There is quite a variety.Unfortunately, in order to learn how to play at the right tempo, etc, I rely on recordings. Now, I realized that i have to purchase the CDs if I want to play along. The separate editions contain the cds but not the dvds; had I known that the DVDs did not contain the written material, i would have purchased the volumes separately.UPDATE: 6/25/2011 - The author replied to the review (how awesome is that!) and pointed out that the material i was looking for is actually on the second DVD (which I had not watched because I have not reached those lessons, yet.) I checked out the material and I am very happy! I can play along as I study each piece. I changed, for this reason, my rating to 5 stars. Excellent!

It's not a bad series at all. My only real complaint is that there is no CD that demonstrates the songs in the book for you when you buy the anthology. The DVD only does demonstrate a hand full of the songs. Also, there isn't much actual instruction. It kind of uses a Rosetta Stone approach, which may not work for everyone. By that I mean it gives you some music and leaves you to play it and figure it out as you go. It could be used stand alone instruction, but I would recommend face-to-face lessons every couple weeks for a few months to make sure you aren't developing bad habits. That being said, I would recommend to start with. It does more explaining, has a CD that includes both an accompaniment and demonstration of each song, and gives a more guided approach to the violin. I like it better for learning, and this set better for songs. Oh and the

I bought about every beginners violin books and CDs and Videos I could find. None were better and a lot were very inferior to the ABCs of violin. DO get the first 2 books with the CD and DVD. The "missing" information beginners need that some say is missing from this book IS contained in the video. If you want to learn, and need a good book to use with out lessons ( I would need to drive over 100 miles to get a leson), This is the best. No matter what book or method you use to learn, it will take practice too. I try and practice at least 2 hours a day, but I'm 50 and want to play some nice music that most wouldn't touch with 2 to 3 years of lessons.
