The caxixi is played by holding the handle in one hand and shaking, or by hitting against the other hand, like a tambourine. My toddler was playing with it and gave me a small metal piece that fell from it, luckily he is past the mouthing stage but would never trust a baby or young child alone with this. Not sure if the recycled pieces inside are rusty or if other little parts can fall out, so that makes me a little nervous.It did not fit the description, the one we received was fully woven, no gourd base. One of the woven pieces ends on the outside making a sharp end.Overall, makes a decent noise and like the instrument, but a few concerns to think about. I do like supporting artisans so not sure if I'll return or not, just can't save for the baby anymore.

Beautifully made basket weaved rattle... not returning the item as I like the charity it works with.However please tell me ... does this look like the Caxixi shaker ?Where is the maraca‐esque quality of it?It sounds like it got filled up with left over jingle bells from Christmas. Sorry but a bit disappointed as I needed it for ritual and I got a basket weaved jingle bell shaker.

Well made and sounds great. My friends 2 year old LOVES this!! He bangs it, throws it and slobbers on it. I dont think its specifically meant for babies but the little dude sure gets down and makes music with it. Wonderful cause too, your money is going to a great charity. Buy it!

I have purchased many items from world percussion USA. They are unique in the fact that the instruments that you purchase from this company are made by hand and the money that is made is returned to those who create them in Africa. The Africa heart wood project is an excellent charity where they provide clean drinking water for villages and an economic opportunity to have pride in the things they create and help feed their own people while doing and creating the things that are culturally significant. This rattle is just one example of unique items that you can purchase from world percussion you S a. As a teacher, I use many of their instruments in my sessions with autistic children who really enjoy the interesting sounds that they create. So in essence, this rattle is unique because it does not rattle, it jingles. It is shaped like a rattle using a gourd and a woven material with a handle. Inside the rattle, there are repurposed materials such as bottle caps to create the jingly sound . These items are not perfect, they are hand made and each one is unique. If you get a bad item, they are more than happy to take the item back and give you a new one. I have worked with him on many different occasions and they have always been very good about being fair. In today's world, we are always looking for what is the cheapest item we can buy, when you buy a product from world percussion USA, you're not only buying with your pocketbook, you are buying with your conscience.
