Sturdy, cord is pest and chicken proof. Worked down to 15 degrees F ( coldest it got in the coop). I would trust it at lower temps. The heater is in our 2 gallon plastic poultry waterer from rentacoop with horizontal poultry nipples. Best combo ever - clean water is no work and no worries. Not the cheapest system up front, but after months of use, I think it will last years, so a good value over time.

2021-03: My previous model burned out after 5 years, this is its replacement. Weather here in MN still is below freezing overnight, with the occasional snow, which may continue thru April (you never know).I'm so glad that there's an actual metal spring spiral around the power cord (previous one only had plastic) as the squirrels chew on these.I use a 16-18" W and 3" D plastic plant saucer, holds about 2 gallons of water, and it's deep enough for the larger critters to get a good drink, plus even in sub-zero weather, there's enough water left after evaporation to still completely cover the heater.Critters that use this water dish are squirrels, turkeys, ducks, deer, multiple types of small birds, bunnies, opossums, raccoons, and chipmunks.2023-10 update: the unit I bought in 2021 is still working. Yay! And now I need one more of these to replace the loop-style de-icer that's just sitting in a small pool of solid ice...burned out.

I purchased this Allied Precision Heater on November 28, 2019. It has lasted one season. It is warrantied for one year. It does a good job keeping the birdbath from freezing over. My experience with this type of submerged heater is that they will only last 1-2 years and then the GFI starts tripping. It is really disappointing that the manufacturers can' improve this product for better longevity. This Allied Precision Heater is made in the USA which for this product is either a threat or a warning.

It's worked really well since I have gotten it--so far in temps down to 15 F. It's in a plastic bucket and the animals have pushed the heater right against the side of the bucket, and so far it hasn't melted anything. The best part is that unlike the other heaters I looked at, it has a long enough cord to run to my grounded outlet 4 feet away, and the cord is protected from nibbling. I do use it with a pump to circulate the water, so I don't know how efficient it would be in a simple trough, but for what I am using it for it's perfect.

I used this in my chicken coop this past winter in my 5 gallon bucket that has chicken nipple waterers on the bottom. It worked great keeping the water in the bucket from freezing, but when it got below 20 degrees the nipples would still freeze up, even though the water inside the bucket was not frozen... I had the waterer outside in the run, so maybe moving it into a coop would help, but my coop isn't quite big enough for that.. Not sure what to do now for next winter. This winter was mild, so next winter could be rough if its below 20 degrees often. On really cold days I still had to bring out a separate waterer constantly and poor HOT water into my 5 gallon bucket to get the nipples to work again. UGH. I don't think this is a problem with the product though, I believe probably just the cold wind when it gets below 20 freezes up the nipples. Trying to find way to keep that from happening next year. :/ I may just need a heater that keeps the water warmer.

We have a birdbath, mounted low so all the critters can use it too, in the backyard. There's also a large waterbowl on the porch by the dry catfood, we leave that out for the(too dang many!) lost/stray cats that visit us. (Folks, cats DO NOT need to go out, -ever-. If you love your cats, please spay/neuter and keep 'em INSIDE!) We're in Minnesota, so it gets colder than..., well, reeeeally cold. We've got one of these gizmos in each of the above-noted water spots. Our critters and birds appreciate the un-frozen water in winter. Our water and the feeders see more wildlife than any of the neighbors. We and our cats enjoy it. It must be tough for critters and birds to find drinkable H2O in the winter. We've had a number of these things over the years. They typically last about two years. I remember being amazed a ways back that one we had was still going beyond three years, but on average we have to replace one of the two every winter, when we find the water frozen solid. I'd like to find one of these, or any brand of heater, that reliably lasts longer than ~two years, but everybody I talk to says that's unlikely. Oh well, it is what it is. The good news, however, is that while they may not last more than a couple of winters, they work very well til they quit. They don't seem to demand excessive electrons, and just one'll keep nearly 3 gallons of water unfrozen in temps as low as -20 F. I'll revise this review someday if these gadgets start lasting longer. In the meantime, just get one, make your wildlife happy, entertain your cats at the windows, it's all good.

Works much better than I expected. Original review lost, will try to recreate it here. I bought this for a ceramic urn-shaped fountain which was freezing in some unexpected cold weather. I like the fountain very much and hate to turn it off for the winter just because there might be a couple of really cold days here in Washington, DC. Fountain was starting to freeze up from the bottom this week. The top was threatening to close over. Last time that happened the urn broke and I had to buy another (very sad occasion) Bought this heater, put it in the water and plugged it in to an outdoor GFCI outlet. Overnight the fountain lost about 1/2 the ice and was running freely. The key thing is I bought the WRONG SIZE heater! This is for less than 25 gallons and I estimated wrong. My fountain is about 130 gallons! but most of that is below ground. My installer thinks the water in the reservoir below ground is warmer and that might be helping the heater to work. Will probably buy another one as a back up.
