This unit replaced a $45 one that broke a year or so ago. I wanted a better player for the old records my wife and I still own. Some assembly required: Most of this is easy, but some have found assembling the counterweight a challenge. It must be placed on the rear end of the tone arm. The weight is pushed on to the tone arm, but I recommend you try turning the dial on the weight back and forth slightly before doing so. I found it fairly stiff to turn, which is a good thing. Once that is snapped into position the weight can be rotated and can be adjusted to balance the tone arm and put the proper mass on the recording. Reading the directions a few times before assembly helps. Now for the sound. I was generally pleased with the sound and performance of this phonograph player. However, it did exhibit some "vibrato" or "warbling" in spots on some of our records, one the the worst being one of our favorite recordings, Myron Bloom and the Cleveland Orchestra playing the Strauss horn concerto No. 1. After consulting possible causes on the web, there seemed to be two I could do something about. The first thing I did was to remove the platter and invert the drive belt, thinking it may have been in the initial position for some time. But I doubt this was a real problem. The second thing I tried was reducing the volume of the sound. Those beautiful musical vibrations travel through the tone arm to the speakers, which also vibrate and send those back through the tone arm again. Keeping the volume down helped a lot. Before writing this I played the horn concerto again and it was beautiful, and was still loud enough for the room without annoying my neighbors. In addition to having its own amplifier and speaker system, this player has an output connector so one can connect to external speakers (which should mitigate the feedback or "warble" problem), or to an amplifier with a line-in mode. If you have music on a mobile phone, you can play the phone's music via Bluetooth through the phonograph music system, but not vice-versa. There are turntables out there that are a little better and cost more. I am happy with the sound of this one for the price. Hence 4 stars rather than 5, but 5 stars for price/quality performance.
