Timer was easy to set, but after 2 months of working fine, when the timer went off, all the feed was dispensed all over the ground. Unable to fix the timer.

It works great once you spend a couple days trying to figure the darn thing out! A shame the creators of this don't care enough about people to make their lives a tad bit easier and they apparently don't really care about animals because I'm sure most people give up and send this back! YOU DO have to drill holes in the bucket to attack the motor. Dumb, but really not that difficult if you have any skills to use a drill and a screw driver. But, not everyone is, so if you are not, don't buy this. The 6V battery does work, its just maddening to figure out how the heck it goes in there! But, once you do, its simple. So I will tell you. It lays down on its side and the back of the clock/control pad has these 5 holes. That is deceiving have 5, but okay. You only need to hit the middle one and one of the 4 in the corners of the back with the two springs on the top of the battery. The battery then lays down in the bottom. However, if you flip that motor upside down with the battery in there, it will fall out. I actually but a folded piece of cardboard on the edge where the battery catches and made it sit in there snugger, but you still cant flip it upside down and it stay in place. So, don't put the battery in and think you are going to attach the motor to the bucket and all will be ready to go. Programing. What a joke. You just have to keep messing with it. The directions mean nothing, but can give you an idea. That "test" hit the "recessed" button? There is no recessed button. I just kept hitting the right arrow button, then I held down and then hit it again and at some point it opened up a screen that had seconds counting down and it spun around. I did a lot of praying and pushing buttons to see what the heck would work and finally got it figured out. I give it a 4 because it works great, once you figure it out.....two days later.

I've had an American Hunter 225lb tripod feeder for 9 yrs and it's still working perfectly so I know this is a reliable brand. I purchased this hanging feeder based on that over other brands. No assembly instructions came with mine, needed to use my common scene. Center feeder, mark and drill four holes, machine screws go down through bucket and screw right into feeder. Get the varmint guard, plugs right in and there is a cut out for it to attach with two included screws. Did come with instructions to set time and feed time, super easy. Mine came with the xd pro all digital timer/feeder, not analog. All you need is 6 volt spring top battery, no AA required. Mine didn't come with the battery latch/bracket so just cut a small piece of wood to hold it in. Metal Bucket is a must, squirrels will chew through a plastic bucket no matter how heavy duty it is, they have all day, everyday, to work at it.

It works but complicated to program not as easy as the Moultrie feeder...

We own and operate a license hunting preserve and use these feeders throughout our property to provide a food source for our animals and game birds. They work great and are dependable for feeding at different times of the day and work great for hanging so they are out of the way for our customers and protects the feed from the weather and stops wasting feed.

Buyer beware! When I bought the feeder, I temporarily forgot the adage that you get what you pay for. I figures one feeder was just like another, so I bought the one bearing the lowest price. Two immediate draw-backs to this feeder is that is uses an old-style analog (dial) timer, rather than a digital timer. You dial the timer to the current time of day (the instructions admonish you to always dial it clockwise, else risk destroying the timer). You set the feeding times by inserting thumb tacks (provided with the feeder) at the times you want it to feed. The thumb tacks provide a mechanical trigger for switch that sends a signal to the feed-spinner. One downside to this arrangement is there is no "test" button. To actually test that the spinner is working ok, you have to rotate the timer dial (again clockwise) past one of the thumbtacks that you've inserted. Once satisfied, with the time that the feeder spins out (which is controlled by a separate rheostat dial), you the re-adjust to set the time of day.I find this arrangement outdated and cumbersome. Nevertheless, this alone would only cause me to score this a 3 or 4.The reason that I rate this product a 1 is that the spinner keeps getting stuck. I set the feeder up the other day and did a test spin, and all was fine. I went back today to check on it and noticed there was no noticeable change to the level of the corn in the bucket. So, I tried a test spin. Nothing. I tried again, but this time gave the spinner some assist with my finder. Once it started, it completed its spin cycle. I tried to test again. Tested fine. I tried one more time, and again it jammed/stuck. I fooled with it for 15-20 minutes and it would never spin out more than one test spin before becoming jammed/stuck. This process made me appreciate the benefit of a "test" button, rather than having to continually dial the timer dial around.I never could deduce if it kept getting stuck on a corn kernel (as if the spacing between the bottom of the feeder and the spinner is too small - but this spacing is not adjustable), or if it was just a flawed device. Anyway, I ordered a new feeder today from Moultrie (I've also had good experiences with the wildgame innovation feeders). Won't be buying another American Hunter product (I recognize that I could have just gotten a bad unit, but my first experience with this American Hunter product is enough to sour me on the brand). (NOTE: I was using a brand new Energizer battery, so lack of battery power was not the issue - again, occasionally i'd get a good strong test spin before it would jam again)
