About this item

  • Each rock measures approximately 1-2 inches in length
  • Metamorphosed type of goal
  • Greater hardness & higher density than bituminous coal
  • High metallic luster

A hard, compact variety of coal with a high luster, Anthracite is known for having the highest carbon content, fewest impurities and the highest calorific content of all the various types of coal. Each piece measures approximately 1.5 x 1.5 inches.

The most metamorphosed type of coal, it features a carbon content of between 92.1-98%. It features three separate grades: standard, which gets used mainly in power generation, while both high grade and ultra high grade are primarily used in the metallurgy sector.

It differs from the more ordinary bituminous coal by having a greater hardness, higher relative density, and a luster that is often a semi-metallic with a mildly brown reflection. Anthracite coal also goes by the names black coal, hard coal, and stone coal.

Anthracite is possibly best known in United States history when an Athracite vein from an abandoned coal mine that ran beneath the town of Centralia, PA caught fire in 1962. It is still burning as of 2015, and has since turned the town into a virtual ghost town. As of 2013, only 7 people were reported to be still living in the town. At its current rate, it is estimated that the Centralia fire could continue to burn for at least another 250 years.

Very satisfied with this product overall, would absolutely recommend this vendor and product. However, coal is not a toy, and has inhalation and other hazards if handled unsafely. The packaging for these coal pieces is a sealed plastic ziploc type bag, which is very good. However, mine had small holes poked where the ridges of the coal were, which I didn't expect when I opened the USPS mailer. I suppose the bag was slightly too small for those pieces. That's problematic because coal dust could have leaked out. I would recommend the seller use a larger bag or double wrap in some way to avoid this.Besides that, the package doesn't include an MSDS, so I found one online from a similar source to include near the item.

Purchased for daughter’s science project. Received several small pieces in a dusty plastic bag. Coal dust cones from coal! Including that because some reviews I read state items received weren’t as “clean” as the picture. It’s coal! Coal is dirty. This was perfect for our needs.

A nice coal, aged well (at LEAST since the Carboniferous Period). Should find a spot on any table. Why buy refurbished coal when you can get brand new coal for nearly the same price? And the warranty is very good as well.
