This rather arcane contraption seems like, and indeed is, a great way to do some simple (basic) astrophotography, as it does hold your (lightweight)camera, point and shoot, or phone well enough. But I do wish it were made of a lighter material, or designed abit differently so it wouldn't be so heavy.

it is difficult to set up. I ended up buying a different one. I am using the parts from this adapter to upgrade my other adapter.

The first thing to note is that this item comes with no documentation whatsoever. Your only "user's guide" is returning to the product page and looking at everything. That being said, assembly and setup as shown are pretty simple.The clamp works well as shown for point and shoot cameras with a low lens center and with smart phones having the camera centered on the back of the phone. However, if the smart phone has the camera(s) in the upper left corner when facing you (as most new phones do), there is a huge problem. Unless the phone is quite small, the lens and camera will not align at all when installed correctly. There are two work arounds that I found to make this work.First (and least desirable) is to turn the phone clockwise, placing it on it "right" side from portrait orientation. This does not work well since most phones have the power and volume buttons on that side. This position makes these buttons inaccessible and the phone holder may actually press and activate the buttons (as happened to me).The second option was less obvious, but worked well for my larger phone. Remove the screw and washer from the post that holds the scope clamp assembly. Next, loosen the two thumbscrews holding the assembly in place and remove it from the post. Reinstall the assembly upside down (round part down) and replace the screw and washer at the top of the post. Doing this allowed the scope clamp to sit higher and allowed me to align the camera and eyepiece.Had there been documentation included describing the assembly and the possible issues, I would have given another star. For what it is, it works well. It certainly works better than the similar looking flat clamps that leave no room to adjust the distance between the phone and eyepiece. Those do not work at all with a case or a phone that has a camera that protrudes a bit.Overall, I am happy with this purchase and product.

Metal construction. Used this to mount a point and shoot camera to my vortex spotting scope. I did make a small modification so that the locking collar would fit over the eyepiece release mechanism. Seems to be pretty well made, very adjustable.
