I have a lot of bushes that need trimming. My old trimmers lasted about 15 years. They finally gave out. There is no comparison from the horse and buggy to the mustang cobra when looking at these two trimmer. My topiary bushes are much cleaner and were easier to trim. Please invest in a proper whetstone and these will always stay sharp. Because I have so many bushes, these trimmers will be honed up after each use - which is every weekend. I like how they trim flat. My others didn't and I was just not aware they did not. This make a straight line cut easier to perform. They also make cutting round and oval lines easy too. Light and easy to use. Worth every penny.Update:Now that I have had a chance to use these trimmers for awhile, let me tell you about them. I trim/manicure my topiary every weekend - front, back and side yards. "Every weekend." My plants were looking fine before, but that was before I had these P51-F trimmers. WOW! I don't quite know what happened to my plants. It seems that they have taken on a new life. They are more full and even in their shape. I love the fact that the trimmers stay sharp through the 2 1/2 hours of trimming. Of course I clean, hone the edges and polish them after each use. I just wished that my older ones had broken long before now so that I could have been using these. I don't know what anyone else's experience is with them, but for me I don't quite think I would ever change from these. Very much work the money. Before, even with a sharp blade (habits are habits on sharping before each use), it was like I was hacking. These cut. So effortless. You cannot go wrong with the purchase. Find a way to purchase them. You just have to have them.

The Bahco P51-F hedge trimmers, made in France, are clearly superior to any Chinese designs found at local big box retailers. The blade is very sharp and the heft/design of the tool permits larger cuts to be made when necessary. While these hedge shears could feel heavy over a long period of use, the quality and consistency of cut more than compensates. With proper sharpening and maintenance they could easily last a lifetime.

Reasonably sharp when delivered. Looks sturdy. Chopped up some fava bean stalks quite nicely. Haven't used very much yet.

Very smooth cutting action with high quality SHARP steel blades. It's a little heavy on the blade end, but has nice soft handles that make holding it very comfortable. Puts cheap pretenders like Fiskars to shame.Keep in mind that these shears use hardened tool steel which is NOT stainless/rust-proof. A quality constructed tool like this will last for years (if not decades) if properly cared for. Always remember to wipe down the blades with an oiled rag or spray with WD-40 after *every* use if you want your blades to remain sharp and rust-free.

I wasn't immediately convinced... but after six months occasional use around a rather rustic one-acre garden I have to say that these shears have come into their own. With the notches at the base of the blades you can open the shears wide and tackle quite substantial stems; this can abe very useful when up steps re-shaping an overgrown laurel when otherwise you would have to put the shears down and find the secateurs instead. They will trim the softest yew neatly without chewing instead of cutting, so a neat finish is obtained. They're ground in an unusual way; I was always taught that shears or scissors should only be sharpened on one side of each blade so that a true 'shearing' action is obtained. These have the blades ground on both sides, but they definitely cut very well indeed. They hold their sharpness and, dried after use (and preferably oiled), they do not seem to rust easily. I've noticed that some reviewers say that the rubber cushions are augmented by being sprung. Not mine; they're just very effective rubber cushions. Yes, these shears are expensive, the price of a budget electric trimmer. But with their quality I think they will outlast any such powered gizmo. Oh, and they're much quieter than their electric cousins, and give a degree of healthy excercise, and thus much more therapeutic!
