Took me 5 years to figure out how to use this instrument. There were no instructions on how it actually worked. I finally had to watch a YouTube video. If you have assembled the telescope correctly.1) Adjusting the tripod axis: you must aim the barrel (using the finderscope) at the star "Polaris".2) After focusing on Polaris, use the graduated movement [in degrees] of the Declination to drop the barrel of the tube to the latitude of a desired object. Then turn the polar axis adjustment, Right-ascension [also graduated in degrees] to the coordinates of that object.3) Use the finderscope to approximately center the object, then look through the telescope eyepiece to fine tune the image focus.4) Lock down the declination axis.5) Follow the object by carefully turning the Right-ascension knob to keep the object in the field of view (this only needs to be done as the object nears the edge.

First off, the assembly instructions for this telescope are absolutely terrible. You will have to refer to the instructions, the picture on the box and some blind luck to get it together. There are really no instructions for it's use either. I'm not sure what I expected, but Barska could have done a much better job with this. That being said, the telescope does an okay job of magnifying things, but again, the instructions are of no help, so be prepared for much trial and error.

Can't see a thing. I've checked to make sure there's no lens cap still on. I"ve tried both eye pieces that were included. I've looked on their website and can't seem to find a phone number for customer service. I"ve searched websites to see what I could do. Some websites suggested looking at near objects during the day to learn to focus, but I"ve tried same thing looking at a bright moon and no light is visible. Its so disappointing to my son because it was a birthday present. Not only that, it came in a Labeled Box so there went any surprises... I can't even return it because I don't have the original box.. what a waste of my money...

Be Wary of any telescope that suggests more than 60 power per inch of its mirror or lens diameter.114mm/25.4 mm per inch = a 4.5" telescope .... 4.5 x 60 = 270 power and that is ideal = Perfect OpticsTake a look at the Tele Vue 127mm ( 5" ) refractor .. it is rated at " 300 power " ( 60x per inch ) ...but it also is a Seven Thousand Dollar ( $7000) telescope .. mount Not Included. What happens is that the images may become larger, but the magnification just amplifies the imperfections in the optics with a resultis that all you see is a big fat Blur.

This telescope's exterior is well constructed, seems solid enough. The lens was a 3x Barlow lens but I researched a 2x Barlow would be best. The tripod is a little flaky. Doesn't take much to move the image around. I won't lie to you, I did not "try" this scope as once I received it I noticed a defect and decided to return it right away. Once returned I began to research what's better. I chose a StarMax 90mm Table Top Mak-Cass from Orion instead. It was on sale for slightly more then the Barska through Canadian Telescopes through Amazon. Celestron makes what seems to be the same scope (who copied who I don't know) called Celestron 21045 114mm Equatorial PowerSeeker Telescope. Celestron is a bit more well know than Barska for telescopes. Barska are known for rifle scopes, hunting binoculars, and terrain scopes so in no way am I bashing a manufacturer, simply stating the space telescopes they sell can be better.I'm still an amateur but repeating what the pros have said in forums and articles 'I've learned any scope that advertises it's maximum magnification is not worth the money because it's MAX is irrelevant. Some objects up there can be seen better and more clarity at lower magnifications. You're better off spending just a little bit more for a better scope'.Read forums and articles on choosing the right scope. Once you find one you like make a search on it for reviews (ie: Barska 900114 Reviews in your search engine). Remember you don't have to spend $$$hundreds for a good scope. But with any hobby you will either upgrade and upgrade or lose interest so start low with a well made scope. In my case I know I have a desire to explore and so does my daughter.

This telescope is very good in all aspects, and comes with a nice set of lenses too (that many other telescopes don't).2 Problems:1- Very Useless Instructions Manual (In Box and Online) - You CANNOT build/use it unless you are crafty or experienced.2- Shaky Tripod (Stability a bit of an issue) - A bit of an issue when using the highest magnification.BUT, its a good telescope for the price. Recommend it for novices and intermediate astronomers.

I bought this telescope for my 7 years old son, a little bit complicate because of it equatorial axis mount but it will be an excellent tool for him for a long time in his life. With the help of an adult there is no problems. It's an excellent purchase for an amateur starwatcher !The only thing is that I don't think somebody shoult pay it full price, I bought it at 50% of rebate. Because there is some delicate plastics pieces that should be in metal like I already seen in an old version telescope... but we are now in 2012 and most of product are in plastic made in china to get best price.Enjoy :)
