They can be used for threading rods, bolts, and studs. Made from heat-treated carbon steel, they are rust- and tarnish-resistant tools. The hex dies are tooled to the most exacting specifications to ensure that threads provide a tight fit. Laser-etched head shape of the die is designed for use in die stocks and adjustable wrenches; dies measure 1 In. across the flat. They marking indicates starting side, ensures size identification and won’t wear off.

I used die to cut 1/8 ips threads on lamp shade support pipe. One face of die is clearly marked to face the work (object to be threaded). The key to success is to very carefully square the die to the work in both directions and then patiently start by turning the die by hand until it grips. Then squirt a little lubricant (WD 40 or 3-in-1 oil) into each hole of die between cutters and proceed slowly. I used a 1" open end wrench to turn the die and cut about 3/4" of perfect threads. I held the pipe (work ) in my vise with rubber pads to prevent scratching. Watch while cutting that work does not turn.Review by Mr Mellow.

I found it didn't really start cutting until further down the piece than I needed... I just need to chase some threads at the very tip and it was useless for that...

Worked wonderfully for threading lighting fixture stems that I had to cut to shorten in order to raise the height from an island. 1/4 to 1/2 turn at a time with some cutting oil or WD-40, back off and clear threads when necessary. I cut 4 sets of 1/8 - 27 npt threads 3/8" with no problems. Slow going but precise.
