Works great and easy to use, but it does over heat if you repel longer distances.

I've been trying to get some gear for a while and I saw these pop up... not as secure as an ATC or GriGri, but definitely a tool I feel every beginner climber needs. Learn how to use it as a simple rappel tool, learn how to use it as a belay device, learn different methods of emergency belay for rescues and which methods hold which weights best without yanking you flying. Now you not only have a tool to descend, but also a tool to belay others and rescue them even if they are heavier than you.I loved these, I could care less about the colors, but I do find it handy as the red is my emergency, and the black is my regular backup. A quick way to differentiate. All this given, this is a friction tool and should be used in junction with something else ideally, but in emergencies use this by itself to effectively accomplish the task.I wasn't completely sold on the dogears as they are a little awkward, but they open up a few different options for secure transport so overall I think they are a great addition (even though I still haven't seen many other people own an 8 with the ears...)They are solidly constructed and a great tool for me to have in my bag, I'd have no problem recommending these to somebody looking to replace or build their backup/rescue/primary rack. These are capable and affordable, just make sure you know how to attach it securely and effectively before trying to use it!

They perform the function very well. Made of Aluminium, and they're fairly lightweight.

I have been climbing for a long time and needed another set of gear for a backup set of gear. These appear to be well made, they are smooth and made out of lightweight aluminum. Like another reviewer has said there was no marks on this for weight ratings. This will not replace my main gear but it will work for a backup / emergency set.

The construction is solid with good angles to joining seams and smooth finish overall. It shows an energy rating, but no ANSI or other affiliation standards met. If you are using these professionally your insurance may have requirements for such endorsements. If for your own enjoyment or use then finding that test balance for yourself is enough.I ran a dead weighted line quickly to see if it would burn in a rope mark easily. There was not so much as a polish on the finish. I deadloaded about 500lbs and did a control descent with it and there was no deformations or even polish marks on the finish. So I descended and did some lockoffs on the route. The ears simplify bringing the line on hold to lock the descender. Releasing is simple as well and did not require any belay pull to release.I have good confidence in these and have included them into my rappelling gear. Again, if you are professionally using them you might have the conversation with your insurance before bringing into service something not stamped with appropriate organizational endorsement.Overall, for personal use these meet or exceed the twice plus load testing I have given them.

So to be honest I can't really gauge how well this is for mountain climbing. I don't climb. I do use rope a fair amount for hauling stuff in my truck and lashing other items to my kayak. I actually have this secured to a webbing belt around by waist and then have a 1/4" thick rope attached to the back of my kayak and then looped onto this so that if I capsize the boat doesn't get far from me. I also use the same system for when I get close to shore or a docking point to make sure the kayak doesn't float away from me when I exit. It's worked great for that. The finish is decent. Not perfectly smooth (see photos) but two of these for this price is pretty good.
