People occasionally ask how to reset the timing on their lawnmower engines. The timing is "set" by properly locating the flywheel on the crankshaft using these locator keys.The spark coil, mounted on the engine block, does not spin or move. It reacts to magnets permanently imbedded in the rotating flywheel to produce the spark.The timing is pretty foolproof until you hit something with the blade, and the flywheel spins a little bit on the crankshaft. This intentionally throws the timing off. If the flywheel couldn't slip at all, the impact from hitting something could destroy the crankshaft.These soft metal keys are designed to hold the flywheel in alignment, but also designed to shear (break) if something is struck, allowing the flywheel to slip. By allowing it to go out of timing, the engine is saved from more serious damage.Not being overly cautious about roots and rocks imbedded in my lawn, I go through a lot of these.

I just ordered these on 4/27/22. Keys came in a Briggs&Stratton factory oem bag. 10 keys in the bag, made out of metal, looks & feels like aluminum. Very good quality, works as they should. In the description it says the material is plastic, this I believe is a typo, mine were made from aluminum.

These were a great value for the money spent. My lawnmower blade hit a metal pole that was cut short and hidden in the ground, causing the flywheel key to shear as intended. The replacement fit perfectly and my mower started right back up!
