Almost impossible to insert batteries, you have to try and hold them so they don't fly out everywhere while putting the cover on and it has a horrible fit and is near impossible to get it latched. Both problems combined and it IS impossible, threw them in my parts box.

This works just as you'd expect. Instead of using the rechargeable battery on my UV-82 I can put regular alkaline batteries into this and snap it onto the radio just like the rechargeable battery. A nice item to keep around for emergency use when you might not have the ability to recharge your regular battery, but you have a lot of alkaline batteries around.

As other reviews have noted, these fine GMRS radios are useless in an emergency when ac power is down since the original batteries cannot be recharged. This battery backup case using AAA batteries is the solution. Unfortunately the quality is really poor. The batteries, plus the electricity pass-through dummy, tend to fly out of case before the back can be snapped into place. Removing the back is also difficult, requiring use of a 1/18 tiny screwdriver to pop it off at the top. Since the metal parts inside are also fragile (some as thin as ordinary kitchen aluminum foil) and also easily fall out I took photos of the inside so there is a chance I can correctly replace them when they inevitably fall, or pop, out. My first unit was replaced because it was unusable. Note that the case (at least the replacement) does not fit the radio correctly but can be made to work (fourth photo).Unfortunately, I must recommend this item as necessary.

The pack was a little difficult to open, until I did and saw how it fits together. It seems sturdy and attaches to the radio like it was made to! My only issue / regret is that it is AAA size, which I knew when I bought it. So much for my "standardization" project. Seems like it is a good value.

If you own a UV-82 as part of an emergency/disaster plan, then you are already aware of the issue of what happens if the power goes out for an extended period of time. Right? So, how are you going to power your radio once the batteries run out? There are a variety of options, and this battery pack should be in your kit. Regardless of the situation, AAA batteries will be more readily available, and easier, and faster, than most other power options. That's why it would also be wise to keep a dozen (or more) fresh batteries on hand.As for how this little battery pack actually works. It works! I have mine loaded with Energizer Lithium because those batteries have a 20 yr. shelf life and hold a ton of power. For me, this is simply an emergency back-up battery, and the regular battery pack that comes with this radio is what I use. But if the lights go out, for a long time...solar is a good option, but AAA batteries are fast and easy. P.S. I did go without power for 5 days after Hurricane Irene, so I know what it's like to get caught in the rain...it was miserable...and that was not even all that bad.

It works. Need a small flat-blade screwdriver to flex it at top to open it.You put in 5 AAA Alkaline batteries + the 1 dummy cell (supplied with the holder pack).Few alternatives exist for using Alkaline batteries as emergency backup for two-way radios. This one works. This battery holder / battery case / battery pack meets my team's needs. It fits our BTech GMRS-V1 and MURS-V1 radios.I have experience with an AA case for a Baofeng UV-5R radio - that UV-5R case was poor quality. This BL-8 case for GMRS-V1, MURS-V1 is better quality so I am pleased.I would like a pack/case that holds AA Alkalines (not AAA), because AAA have so little energy in them and are expensive. I might have to engineer one myself.I'm rating it well, because no other options exist for Alkaline battery holders for these two-way radios. I gave this a 5 for value, 5 for battery life, 3 for durability.

A simple Amazon search for "Baofeng AAA" will result in dozens of battery pack shells like this one for $3 to $5 dollars. Some offers even include two battery pack shells. The others also have clear opening instructions and are not the same as the stock battery shell. This item is very cheaply made with low quality plastic and springs and contacts that will not stay put when used regularly (as many have noted in other reviews). This item is actually identical to the stock Li-ion battery pack, just without the battery inside it. IDENTICAL. They just don't seal it, and don't put a battery in it. So, at the most this should absolutely cost less than a Li-ion battery pack. Its the same shell, just without the battery and without being sealed with adhesive.Springs popped out upon opening mine. There are no instructions for how to open the case and I'm sure it would break with very light regular use. You must use a flathead screwdriver or other small wedge to even open it. Like the stock battery its not meant to be opened and re-closed over and over. Its 300% overpriced when compared to similar offers on Amazon. Unfortunately the other battery packs don't fit the radios this pack works with. Despite the poor reviews I wanted to believe this would be a decent product. Eneloop AAA Ni-MH batteries are great and easy to charge with a USB based solar panel and an Xtar charger with USB cable but there's No way I trust this product to last any length of time. Certainly not worth ~$16. Might be worth $3 to $5 like the dozens of other offers available on Amazon for other Baofeng radio models. I hope they can release a battery pack shell like this that doesn't seem so flimsy, and at a price that's reasonable. Very disappointed. Don't waste your money unless you have no other options for reliable back-up or emergency power. In fact, if you don't use rechargeable batteries this isn't even worth it since normal aaa batteries only power the unit as a receiver. It won't transmit on normal batteries. Further, if this isn't coupled with rechargeable high quality batteries, that you can recharge with a usb charger and a solar usb panel then there is no point in getting this. Just buy the cheaper replacement battery that has a higher capacity with the Li-ion battery included.
