Installed and started noticing burnt smell in the fridge and freezer sides. Ice and food were infused with the burnt smell. Then 55 days later, noticed the fridge running full speed fan and constantly. The coils were frosted over and the defroster unit failed!! I took it out and checked continuity - no good. Then I saw where the coil inside the tube had broke and burned up. And this has "Upgraded" in the title???? This is the 2nd defroster I have installed on this refrigerator. The last one I bought on Amazon lasted 3 years. Not great, but acceptable I suppose. Then this one lasted just 55 days - not acceptable. I ordered my 3rd one again from Amazon, but from a different seller. When it arrived, the box looked identical, except it says "New Upgraded". Maybe it'll last 60 days! To be continued....

Very easy to install with google video available. Took 10 minutes to take out old one and put in the new one. It takes several hours to dethaw all the ice around it unless you use a heat gun or even a hair drier. I hope it lasts a long time. But only time will tell. The unit look just like what came out of it.

Direct fit on my GE refrigerator. Appeared to fix what ailed it. Did have an initial strong burn in smell. That appeared to reduce after a few days.

I bought this knowing it may not work, may not work well or may only work for 6 months or less. Why? I am an idiot. Just kidding. Although my x may say I am an idiot. I have added a new computer, sensors, condenser fan and a heater. After about 6 months it starting again to fail to defrost. ARGHH!! Since this was like a 15 dollar fix, I thought I would try it. If it works, fine. I may even buy a GE defrost heater if this one holds for a month or two, because I will know the problem was the heater so why not invest in a better unit - not the computer (200 bucks ouch) or sensors etc. So if this works for 90 to 120 days, it will be worth it. At that time I may even get the more expensive GE part since it literally takes 5-10 minutes to replace. If it doesn't hold after the 40 dollars plus GE part ...screw it. I am buying a new refrigerator. But after all the other parts I put into it... why not? I will up date this review later. I found the review suggesting it may be a bad placement and engineering as water droplets drop onto the heater...Maybe but why did it work Ok for 8 years before the defrost problem? I also haven't smelled plastic like other reviewers.

Easy to replace the old one and this item was a lot cheaper than buying a new fridge with all the mandated energy savers that break in a year or two.

It does what it is suppose to do, but too well. I changed the heater, this product, the thermistor, and the temperature sensor (Both genuine GE products). The problem is that the heater does too good of a job and not only melts the ice off the coils, but the ice in the ice tray and all the ice cream. In short, too efficient and too hot.
