This is a niche product today, but it is a must have for old lab equipment, audio gear, some older car navigation systems, and for retrocomputing enthusiasts. It allows for easy conversion of slow and clunky IDE drives into CF cards. External access is very convenient -- you can replace hard drive images without opening the case.If you remove the bracket, you can also use this adapter with equipment that does not have standard card slots on the back of the case.

These products do exactly what they are supposed to do. And even better, since CF is pin-matched to IDE, there are ZERO electronics on the board beyond the 40p socket, 4p Molex power and a jumper. That's IT! CF is a literal drop-in IDE replacement. I've purchased two so far, one for a Commodore Amiga 2000 and another for a Pentium 233 MMX retro PC build. The performance on this little card is excellent and the bracket is very high quality. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED!!!

I like using this type of adapter on my vintage computers. Not only is it faster than spinning media, but it is much easier to work with too. This adapter exposes the slot, so the CF can be changed without taking apart the computer. My only complaint is the design of the slot requires you to be perfectly aligned when inserting the CF card. The card slot also only takes the type 1 CF cards, and not the thicker, but electrically identical type 2 CF cards. This is a passive adapter, which means it will only work with CF cards that support the IDE interface, but that is most CF cards that can plug into it. But be aware, that you might have problems with very large CF cards, if they're not backwards compatible with the IDE standard.
