Out of the box the Kapaier rest appears sized for 3/4 and needs some tweaking to fit a 4/4/ violin. The metal base is heavier and stiffer than my genuine Bon Musica rest and also lacks the screw-adjustable small segment at one end.Still, by pressing both holder mounts down by hand I was able to size the rest to 4/4 - though it's still quite a snug fit: Pro - It stays put well Con - it's less comfortable to slide on/off and stands a higher chance of marring a delicate finish. The shoulder padding on the Kapaier has rounded corners making it slightly more 'stylish' than the Bon's severe, squared-off corners (although they've become something of a trademark among keen-eyed players as well). The 'rubber' (probably a polymer) is comparably thick, stiff and resilient as the material on my Bon.I used my Bon as a model to shape the 'hook' end and overall slope of the Kapaier in order to perform an A/B comparison in the same general playing position. At first I missed the extra width of the Bon Musica's padding that fits so well on my particular bone structure. But after a few minutes that sense of comfort returned with the Kapaier and I concluded I can manage quite well with either rest sitting or standing. So all things being equal - except price - I would call the Kapier a more than reasonable alternative for player who don't mind a little extra weight and the lack of fine sizing.

Buy a Kun. They're more expensive, but they're fool resistant.

Gives incredible support for the violin. It's fairly easily adjustable once you figure it out, and once you configure it to your body's contours it gives an effortless hold on the instrument. I've noticed that I've had a lot less tension on my left side while playing after getting this shoulder rest. I used to use a Wolf Forte Primo, but one of the feet broke off and borrowed my friend's Everest until this arrived. Neither even approached the quality of this, which is sad considering the Wolf is pricier and the Everest is very commonly used by students. It does take a bit of getting used to as most shoulder rests don't go over the shoulder and are effectively collarbone rests, but after you get used to feeling it on your shoulder it's extremely comfortable to use. I have noticed that it doesn't adjust that tall, which isn't an issue for my slightly-above-average neck length, but if you have an exceptionally sloped chest or shoulders or possibly very long neck this may not be for you. Though, keep in mind that a taller shoulder rest for long necks may not help: it will just angle the violin up. A taller chinrest usually remedies that much more effectively. Overall, I would highly recommend this shoulder rest to violinists and even violas up to about 15".

I have tried several shoulder rests, including the Kun, and have not been able to use any of them, but upon seeing the large curve of the Bon Style shoulder rest, I imagined that it would work for me. However, I was uncomfortable, feeling pain in my shoulder, and I had to go back to playing the violin without a shoulder rest. I would add that this shoulder rest should never slip off of the violin since the fit is very, very tight - in fact I wondered if I might break the shoulder rest or violin in taking the rest on or off. I would recommend this shoulder rest over others, however, only if you have used shoulder a rest before, and you are comfortable playing with a shoulder rest.

My 9 year old daughter loves this shoulder rest. We bought bonmusica for her when she had 1/2 size violin (after returning KUN and ditching foam stuff). Bonmusica was the most comfortable and adjustable. We just upgraded to 3/4 violin, so we needed to get new shoulder rest as well. Bonmusica can easily be adjusted with additional washer to fit 3/4 but we are letting her younger brother use her old 1/2 violin. I was just about to buy bonmusica again when I stumbled upon this similar shoulder rest for much lower price (I paid $27 vs $47 for bonmusica). It looks and feels great. It adjust so nicely. I would highly recommend this product. Some say customer service is not relevant in reviews, but some feel it's part of the product. Afterall, sometimes we are willing to pay much more BECAUSE of customer service etc. In case you care, I bought it from Vio Music. I ordered on Friday and shoulder rest was at my door Monday afternoon. Talk about lightning fast shipping!!!Update June 2014.A couple of things happened since we bought this rest. Someone stepped on it and the tan rubbery clamp that grasps violin broke. Younger son didn't want to play violin, so we had an extra rest just tucked away from 1/2 violin (bonmusica). I used the black clamp to replace. It worked! Now one clamp is tan and one black. Still worked very well on 3/4 violin. Just last Wed (june 3, 2014) our 4/4 violin arrived. We used the shoulder rest on that. It worked very nicely. I'd say with both original tan clamps it would have worked just as well. The only thing that didn't fit well was the case. The space for shoulder rest in our new case is right at the edge of violin, under fingerboard, between violin and scroll thing. It has a flap. The tan clamp is just a tad too wide so flap can't close. The black clamp from bonmusica fits it perfectly. The higher up space with flap doesn't work either (tad better, still not closing completely). Because of that, we have to put the shoulder rest right where scroll ends (no flap/lid). It fits, but we have to put a piece of cloth to make sure that the metal part of the rest doesn't scratch the tip of scroll. If anything breaks in that shoulder rest (I expect it to break at some point because I have a very sloppy careless kid!) I will unfortunately buy bonmusica just because of less wide clamps that would fit our particular violin case better, and I can't count on my kid to remember the protective cloth or being careful etc. Too bad I can't post a picture.
