Contender peach, a cold tolerant variety, provides a crop of big yellow fruit just when other peach trees are slowing down. The skin is a red-orange color while the flesh is sweet and yellow. The flesh of the peach is firm and resists browning, and the freestone pit removes easily. Tolerant of late-spring frost, Contender's a good choice in growing zones where other peaches falter. Contender is self pollinating. The fruit ripens in mid to late August. Requires 1050 chill hours. Just ordered these in Iowa. I chose Contender peach trees. There were so many different types of peach trees to choose from, so I just picked ones that were on the less expensive side in case they didn't grow. They arrived fast, were properly contained for shipping (I've bought several trees & plants from a different company & they arrive with dirt spilled everywhere & they are really messy to open) so I definitely appreciated that. They arrived quickly & appear healthy. The description & pictures are the same for every tree advertised which is somewhat confusing & misleading. I do wish pictures of each selection were actually used. They arrived without any leaves. I chose this company because I didn't want barely root trees, but actual trees that were established in a container. I am happy so far with this purchase.

I had these shipped to me in Iowa so I could plan out my garden in the meantime. Even being shipped in the below zero temps, these girls held up just fine! 2 weeks in the grow room and we’ve got blooms! The tree I potted up for now has huge blooms (mixture of rabbit poop, coconut coir soil, and peach tree soil). The second is being bottom watered and is still blooming. I am very impressed!!

I received this 3 and a half foot peach sapling in good condition at the end of the growing season - start of fall, which is just right for transplanting and winterizing. The leaves were in good shape and the pot of soil was just right for my project. I planted it in arable, well draining, amended neutral soil and put pine mulch on the ground at the drip edge plus some. I followed the planting instructions to a T. It formed buds right on time. It is winterizing now and I hopefully anticipate some peaches this coming July. It is an Eldora dwarf peach tree that should max out at about 8-12 feet. The chill hours in this area of SW Ohio (hardiness zone 6b) should be just right for optimal growth in the spring. I will protect the buds from freezing at that time with a cover. Since it has not experienced a full season of growth, I will update my tree's performance after the last freeze of the early spring. It may be a bit young yet for fruit production, but buds indicate flowers and fruit, so I will see.

I planted this tree and three smaller ones on the day they arrived. All four are healthy and doing well. I just wish they would be ready to produce peaches next year. The four trees I had before had reached the end of their productive life before I realized it. Peach trees only produce for about 15 years, but I had forgotten that, or I would have planted more about three years ago.
