The higher the temp goes the further its off, at 35C its pretty close. In order for me to get it up to 244F i had to set it to 160C. So it's definitely not a scientific instrument. I would send it back if i had not waited past the return date.edited after reading manual, right there in the manul it says there will be variances.so a temp set at 250C will be 205C

It's been one year and i am very happy with this hot plate. The digital display is perfect, no guess work on how hot your surface is. Heats up very quick and Amazon got the best price compared to fisher scientific or any other rip off lab supply companies. Did I mention this is great for my Bialetti stove top coffee maker too?
