Disclosure: This was sent to me for free via the Vine program. I did not receive monetary compensation to write this review, just the product itself.I'm pretty dumb and I'm pretty new to fly tying. I've been making do with a $20 vise that came with a beginner's set from, of all places, Barnes and Noble. It's been trying, believe me. Not tying. TRYING. I've just started to get the basics down (realistically, it's a whole lot of wrapping thread over a hook until your hands cramp) but, still, I enjoy it. So when this became available, I figured that I'd take the tax burden of $100 MSRP and finally get a vise I don't have to fight against. Bear in mind, I'm a novice. At best.Getting the kit was...not the best. It is a $100 set that came in a mailer envelope. The outside of the case has been beaten like it fell in a stream and got dredged out of the sand a mile away. The wood's scuffed and cracked, especially along the inner flats to the point where I almost got a splinter. The varnish on it is cheap and, after cracking the case open, everything smells, tastes, and feels like 10W30. I don't know what oil they're coating everything with but it's POWERFUL and it's EVERYWHERE. Naturally, everything had become out of sorts after it's tumultuous journey to my doorstep so I tried putting everything back in place but I had to refer to the photos on this page. Why?There's no instructions.None. Not a single one. I have no idea how to put together this vise. I had to literally go to the Perfect Hatch store page, look up their vises, find one that looked similar to the materials in the box, and kinda...go from there. I still don't know if I'm doing it right. I'll give it this though, that vice is HEAVY DUTY. You could put that thing in a purse and blackjack a mugger unconscious. All of this said, I will say that the equipment itself seems top-tier. It's Chinese made but it's Chinese made under US specifications so it looks okay. Coatings seem fine, everything is WELL oiled, and material isn't skimped on. Just, bear in mind, if you get it for someone:A) It will show up beat up. The case dividers will wobble, it'll be scratched and splintering, and the varnish will be chipping. Get a new box or have one made.B) If you know how, tell the person how to set it up if they're a novice because I honestly still have no idea how this thing goes together and I've been trying off and on for nearly a month. But, as previously stated, I AM an idiot so maybe that's just me.

Nice box of hardware! The vise is really nice with a solid base and lots of tools. No instructions so I'm not sure what they are all for as my previous set I didn't have such a wide selection. Everything is sturdy, tightens down well and I'm excited to figure the rest out!

I'm very impressed with the quality of this comprehensive set of fly tying tools. The case is pretty and could be used for storage if you're not going to tie flies for a long time but it's not useful when using any of the tools. Each tool is held tightly in it's special place with a little elastic band so it's totally impractical for managing the tools while building flies. I've taken everything out of the case and keep the tools on my fly tying bench so they are right at hand when I need them. The selection of tools is quite complete and they are all well made in India (NOT China) The vise it in a class by itself, with a heavy duty base and a VERY sturdy grip for a hook. This is my new "go to" vice. Much superior to the normal lower cost variety. The set is very well priced compared to purchasing each piece individually. The bobbin is just OK which was surprising. I'd suggest putting a better bobbin on your next Christmas list. I found the whip finisher to be very smooth. The scissors are perfectly adequate and I had no problem with them but they are not adjustable. There are two hackle pliers, small and large and both required more pressure than I'm accustomed to. There are three sizes of half hitch tools in the set. I'd suggest marking them with a piece of tape or white marker. As far as the lack of instructions, I didn't miss them. If you can't figure it out, youtube is your friend. I really like the set because it is an economical set that includes all the tools you need to start tying flies. Yes, there are better quality tools available but not for this price. Highly recommend.

My husband loves this set. It came in such a nice box. There were so many tools and pieces that he was really excited to use it. I thought it was very nice for the price and so did he. We were pleased but my husband is also a beginner. He thought this would have everything he would need to do what he wanted to do. I would definitely recommend it for another beginner.

This is a good starter kit in that it has everything needed to get started with this craft. It doesn't have any kind of instructions, so we have to look up the right way to do this on a video online.

This water fishing set is absolutely stunning and it comes so presentable that you wouldn't even need to wrap it for Father's Day. I'm not familiar with time flies but my son's dad assured me that this is the perfect all-in-one sad. He absolutely loved it and said he'll be using it for years. The quality tools and hard case give it an old timey look that we loved
