My grandfather created a small plaque to allow this to sit flush against the exterior siding. It really adds some nice character to the entry way. It's just decorative but that bell is for real! Very clear, loud tone to it, we can hear it all the way in the backyard.

A tad heavier/bigger than expected which is just better quality than expected. Bell sound is better than expected, too. Not your typical "now, throw away" piece of junk from China. One thing > the ball and ring (where string is attached) doesn't hang low enough to be seen (as in photo). :( Still happy with this bell.
