Shift motor is made in India, and the socket in the gear is 1.5mm too shallow. This required fitting, measuring, grinding down the transfer case shaft (which I really disliked doing), measuring and re-checking fit. Overall a 20 minute job turned into 3 hours, and modifying my transfer case. I hope it lasts. Too bad nobody sells just the position sensor, as that was all that was wrong with the original shift motor.

Installed on 99 Ford F150 and it works great. I went with a cheaper version first and it worked once before it froze up. This might be a few dollars more than some youll find out there but theres a reason...this one actually works.

miserable installation as you have to plug in the pins manually into the harness. I don't have a lift so I did this on my belly under the truck. Mouinting screws are in a very awkward position too. This is probably not as bad with a lift, but probably still worth saving the $200 in labor. I hope I never have to do this again, but I have two of these trucks so I am sure I will be in for this torture again soon. Second time is usally easier, but no the second time will be just as terrible.

Product as described. OEM quality and design. Prompt shipment. Vehicle application: 1998 f150 5.4l, 4wd, 4r100 automatic transmissionPROBLEM SOLVED? - vehicle was shifting erratically and failed to accelerate. While accelerating, behaved sluggishly. Wide open throttle would cause RPM to be limited to 1500. Vehicle acted as if was starving for fuel, and or starting out in high gear. NO CODES were present in ODB2. Two shops diagnosed problem - FRIED TRANSMISSION - Price tag $2800. I disputed and disagreed with diagnosis. Did my own diagnosis - discovered Transfer case shift motor to be faulty and Transmission Range Selector switch to be inoperative. Replaced both. Vehicle runs perfectly. Shifts and accelerates as designed.INSTALLATION TIPS: Easy task. Basic tools. Excellent access. Tools needed ... 1/4 drive 10 mm socket; needle nose pliers. small screw driver, ordinary small pliers or wise grip type pliers, floor jack, jack stands. Raise truck off the ground. Set jack stands. Place gear selector into NETRAL. Place transfer case selector switch to 2H, if possible. If not, no problem. Workaround follows below. DISCONNECT BATTERY NEGATIVE terminal. Not from habit; serves genuine purpose - this assembly has built in memory and if switch is turned on, and new motor turns, additional steps will be required resetting the new motor to its indexed position, 2H on the transfer case. Will be removing 4 x100mm bolts. 1 bolt retains the bracket, 3 bolts retain the motor. Remove ALL except top bolt at transfer case. Place new motor in close proximity to torsion bar, secure loosely in place with wire, bungee chord, etc, enable you to install one wire into the new motor electrical connector. Take pictures of wiring positions on OLD motor electrical plug. Remove old motor retaining plate holding wires. Identify wire, or wires needing to be connected to NEW motor plug. Remove exterior retaining electrical wires on new motor. Remove using needle nose pliers, located inside connector plug, red or other bright colored retainer. Transfer old wire/s to new plug. Reassemble plug.VERIFY that the transfer case is in 2H. On the transfer case, where the motor attaches, look for a wedge shaped shaft. IF the narrow point of the points to wedge, install the new motor. If not rotate the rear drive shaft few turns, then manually rotate the wedge to line up with position 2H on the perimeter marking where the motor mounts. Rotation direction might be indicated with arrow, or turn CLOCKWISE. Possible that the wedge will turn with finger pressure or use of pliers required. Tighten carefully the bolts - remember, working on aluminum case, steel bolts, easy to strip if over torqued - hence your using the 1/4 drive ratchet. Connect motor plug to chassis harness. Reattach battery negative terminal. Go for test drive. Count your savings; be generous donate some of it to a charitable cause.Time estimate: 1.0 - 1.5 hours

The motor came in a flimsy amazon paper bag.. the motor was in a flimsy cardboard box. Not protected from the shipping process. Had to bend the metal bracket back into place. only had to put one pin in from original harness. tested out the 4x4 on my 98 f150 and it held up to some serious on and off action.

Absolutely excellent purchase from Dorman this motor was for our 98 Ford Expedition and it was a wonderful direct fit and relatively easy to install. Works perfectly well made and buyers beware there are other motors being sold out there for insane prices and they are not direct fits in any way and are back quality. If you want quality stay with Dorman parts.

Works like it should. This was the best price I could find. Dorman has always made good OEM parts.

Perfect fit on a 1999 F150 with rectanglar plug.Went on in 15 min taking my time. I took out the ground pin/wire with a tiny flathead and reinstalled on the new motor. I used some black gasket maker I had laying around, probably isn't required. See an oil leak in the area, so I thought I would.Anyhow, the quality of the part seems good. Napa wanted to sell the exact same Dorman for $40 more.I had to fix some vacuum problems first before this part, behind the battery and on top of the motor.Since 4x4 wasn't engaging easily (having to reverse or restart truck before dash relays would click), I decided to replace this part. Also 4x4 low wouldn't engage at all.Now 4x4 light comes on the second I flip the switch, and low range engages no problem when in neutral with the brake. This part solved ally weird electrical problems, and will update if it fails. Priced right, works great out of the box.

Went through my entire 4x4 system and narrowed it down to the transfer case motor. Price was better on amazon than from the auto parts store (even with company discount). Plugged it in and worked instantly. So happy to finally have my 4x4 working.

I was happily surprised when I opened this box. This is a very nice motor, the plug matched up with the one on the truck and though I was prepared with the tools re-position the wires when I crawled under the truck, there was no need to change the positions in the plug because they were all where they needed to be. The removal and install on this can easily be done in 15 to 20 minutes and it works perfectly. Great part at a very low price and delivered on time. I would definitely recommend this shift motor.

I was getting the mysterious dashboard clicking after engine start and 4X4 was displayed but my 98 F150 wasn't in, nor would engage, four-wheel drive. Many blogs suggested that this motor was the reason. I bought this and expected to have to re-wire the entire plug harness as shown on many blogs and Youtube, but was pleasantly surprised that all wires were in exactly the same location as on my original Ford motor and I only had to remove 1 wire from the old plug coming from the Transfer case and install it into the new plug. 30 minute job and now everything is working as expected and much better that the last few years of 4x4 engagement. Will let you know if longevity is an issue.
