When your $800+ purchase arrives only somewhat contained we have a problem... The process of ordering these Dorman drive shafts is they are essentially built to order and shipped from Dorman, or at least that's what I read. It takes a few days to a week for them to build or locate one, and then it heads your way. I got this one earlier than expected and unfortunately, it is clear why - it appears to have been returned and then re-sold without being inspected or properly packaged. I suppose some blame could be on UPS here, but this was packaged very poorly. The metal staples had been previously removed and packing tape was used to "secure" this extremely heavy box. Some (very little) padding was in the box, along with some random debris - not nearly enough to secure this and I can't imagine this was the way these were originally packaged. The driveshaft itself seems pretty well-built. It mostly survived a trip via UPS (mostly), so I guess that makes it pretty tough! I was able to repair the damage and reuse parts from the original driveshaft (hardware and boot) to replace some of the things that didn't successfully make the entire trip.A couple of nice attributes are the replaceable u-joints and the grease zerk in the center spline which is great for keeping the spline packed with grease effectively fixing the "clunking" issue my truck is known for.Overall I'm happy with the product, but if I weren't in a time crunch I would have refused this and let them try again. Because it is such a big and heavy item the risk of damage is high, especially when it's shipped as it was - so be prepared and schedule the possibility of a return into your project.**Edit - After just returning from a 2500-mile trip I'm going to have to return this driveshaft due to poor balancing. Anything above 68mph and it starts vibrating, at times violently. I had only tested up to about 65mph prior to my trip so this made our journey extra fun having to work around this issue. It's quite possible this is why it was returned (assuming), or it might have been damaged during shipping. I'm going to order a replacement and give this Dorman drive shaft another shot, fingers crossed it arrives INSIDE the box this time.**Edit #2 The replacement driveshaft arrived, also poorly packaged, but at least it seemed to survive physical damage this time. Enough of the original box remained to keep the instructions contained, so that was nice. Unfortunately after installation, this driveshaft also seems to be out of balance. I'm getting vibrations between 35-40mph now, everything below or above seems okay. I've changed my overall rating to 1 star now because there is an obvious problem here. Between poor packaging and poor performance (poor balancing) I'm either going to have to have this brand-new driveshaft re-balanced or return to the stock driveshaft. I certainly wouldn't recommend this product!
