The thermal color change works great! Not a subtle change, and it gets more pronounced the longer you hold it. The graphite seems like a #2. My only grip is that the eraser is very soft, so you'll go through it quickly with any regular use, or a newer, taller eraser may tear, just from pressing it down and side to side, like one of mine did. If the company (or you) replaced these erasers with a denser version, these would be perfect.

We are super happy with these pencils. My son wanted to pass out mood pencils to classmates for his birthday. I read reviews on a bunch of different ones to ensure these would change colors and vibrantly, and they did. We had to basically sit on them/hold them a very long time for them to get warm. But when they did, they were vibrant. Also we liked the inspirational messages.

I bought these for my 7th graders and they were a huge hit - they definitely work, and it was a fun, impromptu, organic science lesson to see who had the warmest hands and how those with cold hands could get them to work!

They are pencils. That’s it! No color change. The only thing that happens is that the gold printed message fades the same day you use the pencil. If you want to buy black pencils for $11. This is what you get here. Very disappointed. I purchased for my class and they were expecting to see their prints appear in mood predicting colors.

Eraser is junk. It smears the pencil lead all over the paper. Takes quite awhile for pencil to change colors. Save your money!
