The lid is very thin plastic. The vent hole is in the middle of the lid and to lift the lid off you have to use the tail part. There is no "latch " to keep it from being bumped off. No directions included. No alarm when it is done. The light just shuts off but the eggs are only soft boiled. My old one had me pierce each egg and had a pin in the measuring cup. This I think has a little plastic raised area on the bottom of the measuring cup which cracks the egg. I just ran it twice back to back with the same eggs and they are now hard boiled by putting 40 cc water in each time. I think part of the problem with this design is that steam gets out through the other decorative pieces and heat escapes. I guess you could try putting 2 measuring cups full all at once.
