Bobbin Thread
Bobbin Thread Lifestyle

It truly is the unsung hero of machine embroidery. It's construction and weight impact the quality of our every single embroidered stitch. Paradoxically, most of the time we don't even see our bobbin thread or even want to. So, what is the purpose of this phantom stitching adjunct? Simply put, it's the bottom half of every stitch, the underside of our embroidery design. Bobbin thread is the glue that holds it all together. So how do we make the most of it? Here's how.

Thread construction is a defining characteristic of bobbin thread performance. We need something strong to eliminate thread breakage. Do overs take time and are way too frustrating. It is also important that we choose a fiber content that eliminates excessive stretch and the resulting fabric puckering.

Quality bobbin threads also limit any extraneous fibers or residue. Threads that favorably meet those requirements are cottonized polyester, 100% cotton or spun polyester.

Element embroidery thread + Bobbin thread

Element Embroidery Thread + Element Bobbin Thread = Perfect Match

Bobbin thread weight or thickness is an all-important consideration. Even though it is mostly unseen by design, its bulk can have a direct and perhaps even negative impact on the way our finished design looks. Most embroidery threads are in the 40-weight range. To reduce the bulk and improve the appearance of detailed embroidery designs it is advisable to avoid adding a second 40-weight thread to the equation in our bobbin. For that reason, the best bobbin threads for embroidery (and even general sewing) are in the 70 to 80-weight range. The lone exception would be free standing lace where we match thread and color.

Choosing a quality bobbin thread can make all the difference between a project we give up on and one we proudly share. Take some time to select the correct one for your particular application. It is well worth your time.
