I purchased the leak detector to find a leak in my aunt's car AC system. When I received the leak detector, I read the instructions, installed the batteries, and decided to test it with a bottle of R-410A refrigerant. I initiated the unit outside in fresh air and allowed it to calibrate. With the detection sensor positioned less than an inch away from the nozzle of the refrigerant bottle, I cracked the valve to let a small amount of gas escape. However, the sensor failed to detect any refrigerant despite multiple attempts and adjustments to different settings.

Very effective at finding freon leaks. They also work for propane, natural gas, gasoline leaks. Be patient, move the probe slowly as there is a delay. Then turn down the sensitivity to narrow down the leak.

I damaged my detector and required a replacement. This one is suitable, sturdy and well-priced. As for its capability's, not sure, have not had the occasion to use it. Hoping it will suffice. As I mentioned, it is a replacement tool.

The good news is that it worked to find the leakThe bad news is that there is quite a learning curve. Here is what I learned, mostly the hard way:1. The batteries must be fresh and installed correctly. The green light must flash brightly when the detector is first turned on. The light is hard to see outdoors2. When the sensitivity is turned to maximum (7) there are a lot of false positives. The detector is sensitive to off-gassing from plastic, rubber, insulation. Even the copper pipe will trigger it if the tip is held directly against it. So don't touch the tip directly to the copper pipe on the maximum setting. That is not a leak3. Dust and dirt can fall into the tip. I unscrewed the tip and sprayed it out with brake cleaner, followed by dry air. Not sure if brake cleaner is good for it, but it worked for me4. However setting it to maximum (7) is also a good way to start to find a leak. The detector beeps faster in the vicinity of the leak. My detector jumped a bit just walking into the room with the leak. Even more when I poked it into the air handler5. A real leak will give readings at lower sensitivity settings but the tip will need to very close to the leak6. My leak was on a valve in the air handler, and when I looked closely it was also oily. The oil should have been obvious because of the oil, but i didn't notice it earlier. Naturally it is in a hard to get at spot7. Good luck

Was money well spent here. My A/C in my car quit working on me. I had a leak for years but I'd just charge it once every 18 months or so. Suddenly it wouldn't hold a charge for more than 3-4 days.Got this sniffer, and chased it down to an AC Condensor leak. Not surprising at 210K miles, and that did the trick. One part to replace, and the right part. No throwing parts at it hoping.Easy to use, and has been reliable for me so far.

Work on tractors for a living and found this tractor had many open jobs for a A/C Leak before, so I purchased this little sniffer and found it would go off in the vent and once I pull the seat out and found the evaporator was leaking. Saved a lot of time and saved the customer as well.

Very impressed. The actual A/C shop could not find the leak with their high dollar sniffer and was going to put in the dye. I purchased this and went back up to shop and showed him exactly where leak was. Even they were impressed. I had charged ac and ran car at idle for about 10 minutes with ac running and then turned off car and tested right away. Took less than 3 minutes to find leak.

I have experience in Ultra high vacuum leak detection and found that Unit will respond indicating a leak if one gets too close to a surface or closes the end off.It does work and for the price paid I can't complain. better instructions, or better yet a you tube video may be helpful to those less experienced. Wanted to add that a friend brougth over his Mega $$ Snap on unit and the results were the same
