Dry Rot is the deterioration of wood caused by microscopic fungi feeding on the resins which bond the wood fibers together, leaving the fibers loose to crumble away. Smith's Original Clear Penetrating Epoxy Sealer (CPES) restores the wood by penetrating in and rebinding the wood fibers together, resolidifying it and impregnating the wood with epoxy resin so that it will be impervious to ever rotting again. Our revolutionary sealer restores dry rotted wood without the need to replace, and preserves new wood so that it will never rot. No other product comes close to the ability of Smith's CPES to penetrate and saturate wood. It is also an excellent primer, laminating the first coat of paint or varnish down to the now preserved wood. The two formulas (Warm Weather/Cold Weather) are designated for temperatures at time of application. You may use Warm Weather Formula for temperatures between 50F and 110F. Cold Weather Formula may be used from 25F to 90F. The following are the six basic steps to restoring rotted wood: 1) Remove any old coatings, and dry the wood. 2) Clean off any very crumbly material. 3) Saturate the wood with Smith's Clear Penetrating Epoxy Sealer, applying until it stops soaking in and a thin sheen is acheived. 4) Once the solvents have evaporated (24 - 72 hrs), apply the Filler. 5) After 24 hours, sand Filler to shape. 6) Before painting, apply a light primer coat of the CPES.

I have not used any penetrating epoxy other than this one, so I'm not able to compare brands. But I can say that this one does a good job of penetrating and hardening wood. I have not used it to restore rotted wood, but have been applying it to the edges of exterior plywood for added protection and strength before priming and painting. Also, on hinges that hold heavy doors, I have been installing the screws into their holes, then backing them out and pushing an epoxy-soaked pipe cleaner into the threaded holes. After the epoxy cures, I install the hinges and screws for good. I don't know how much added holding power this gives the screws, but there are times when every little bit helps. My only complaints are: 1) The price 2) The long cure time. (It varies depending on temperature and whether the epoxy is the Warm Weather or Cold Weather type. But two days is the quickest.)

I used this epoxy sealer on my sailboat to seal the 70 year old cedar keel. It worked very well and I’m not worried about the keel seeping water from a few ancient cracks anymore.

We became familiar with Smith products when we were restoring a 1960's wood sailboat in Richmond, CA. We used it extensively during the work and the only word I can use to describe what it did for us is miracle. It truly will strengthen rotten wood. We applied several coats to the bad areas, each coat uses less and less. We used is under our marine enamel exterior paint and after 5 years and 5,000 miles of ocean sailing our paint looks like new. It's worth every penny.

Excellent product but it has strong fumes. Must be applied in well-ventilated areas or you need a respirator.I used it on 3/4 inch fir plywood to replace the rotted backboards of the port and starboard settees of my sailboat. Note that I finished them with an epoxy primer followed by a single part polyurethane marine paint
