Magnetic Base for Stability and Seamless Workflow

The KNODOS Shaker’s magnetic base is designed for stability and ease of use during coffee preparation. The strong magnet securely attaches the shaker to your portafilter, allowing for a seamless and mess-free workflow.

The Theory

Clumps in your coffee grounds can lead to localised areas of high density within the coffee puck. When tamped, these dense spots cause uneven water flow, resulting in under-extracted regions that negatively impact the flavour. Shaking and distributing the grounds helps to minimise these clumps, promoting a more uniform distribution.

This brand is quickly becoming a serious contender in the premium espresso market, rivaling established names like Normcore and IKAPE with their consistently high-quality products. This blind shaker is a prime example. It showcases an all-metal design (save for the elegant wood inlay on the top,) that is absolutely stunning. It has a satisfying heft to it that makes it feel premium, and the finish appears to be anodized which makes it easy to clean. Precision engineering is evident in the perfect fit of all components, and I've experienced no issues with loading and distributing my grounds. However, I’ve been having an issue with it getting stuck to my basket if I tap either the bottom of my portafilter or the top of the shaker (to dislodge any powder that might stick to the cap during shaking,) and I have to use herculean strength to pry it off my basket. It’s enough of an issue that I’m forced to fit it to the top of my dosing ring instead; and it still works as intended. Despite this minor drawback, this is still a stunning piece of espresso gear any serious espresso aficionado will want to have in their arsenal.

This is my first blind shaker so I'm more than willing to chalk my issues up to "skill issue". That said, my experience with this has not yielded any results better than what I can get with some WDT needling techniques. Some roasts are stickier than others, so you might be able to get some decent results with this with a fair bit of practice. All of that is critique based around the concept, not necessarily the product though.Knodos did a great job making a sleek design and as usual has pretty great attention to detail with their machining. I would have like to see a smoother surface finish on the inside, but I honestly don't know a good way to get a slick surface with this type of oxide coating, and especially without breaking the bank. The design of this is pretty slick, and like usual Knodos has pretty great attention to detail with their machining. That said, the ball got dropped when it comes to the surface finish inside the shaker. My best guess is the inner features were turned, tumbled to deburr, and coated (anodized?) leaving a decently rough surface that my coffee seems to love to stick to.I'm not getting the clean cascades of grounds you see in a lot of blind shaker clips online, and instead I'm getting sticky clumps I need to dislodge to plop them in the basket. The result is a bed that is MUCH less dense than when I WDT it, not to mention I'm ending up with a couple of grams of grounds stuck in the shaker or unceremoniously ending up on the counter.

I have only positive things to say about this shaker, it works great and feels very solid in your hand (as in not lightweight or cheap). There is zero give when you close it with the lid and shake, everything fits perfectly together, and the magnets are strong/clamp on easily and quickly. I don't normally write reviews but felt I should as this has zero at the time of writing yet is really great for what it does. The ano coating is nice as well and I didn't see any rough spots or defects. Sure the coffee can stick to places after shaking due to static electricity but this is true for any dosing cup or shaker, you just have to RDT and sorta of prime it a little bit and then there are no clumps. (btw your pattern of shaking can effect the amount of clumps, and also try giving the lid a nice tap on the top when you're done)Edit: I forgot to mention that the 54mm shaker fits perfectly in the grinder slot of the Breville Impress machine, so if I'm using that grinder and I can grind straight into the cup and shake after.

There aren't many of these on the market yet, but I believe this to be the best bang for your buck out there at the moment. Very reasonable price, and really works flawlessly. No grinds stick to the inside of the container, unlike I've read for others, and the whole thing looks and feels like quality. My only complaint is the fact that there's a magnetic ring around the bottom to stick directly onto your portafilter. From my understanding this is counterintuitive to how you want the tool to work, i.e. by pouring the grounds into the portafilter from a slight distance and letting the grounds settle naturally with a slight mound of grounds towards the center. I could be wrong, and the magnetic attachment makes things very easy and spill free. But still, it seems a little unnecessary.Regardless, this blind shaker gets full marks for me!

I think I'm becoming a believer for using the Blind Shaker to transfer the coffee grind to my portafilter (and Aeropress), thanks to Lance Hendricks. No need to spend $hundreds on the Weber since this Blind Shaker is already high quality and most importantly, does not have sticky grinds leftover inside the lid or the Shaker.First several shots I did only used a surface level wdt brushing, a distributor to polish the top, and 2x tamping. The shots I pulled were smoother going into the single stream, have no channeling, and better timed. They also lost the sour notes I was getting before this Shaker. All in all, this is a great buy at the price!
