This slim volume, organized in alphabetical order, is a very useful reference for the musician who needs to quickly check how to correct something relatively simple. Not sure where to place a dynamic marking or how to notate a repeat? This book will tell you. On the other hand, if you are a more advanced musician writing a symphony, you don’t need it. They call it “Essentials” for a reason.

This book is meant for those wanting to learn how to write out music notation correctly.I first checked it out from the library and had to buy it for my shelf. It’s organized and simple to learn from.My transcriptions are now looking more professional thanks to this book!🤘😷🤘

The large version of the smaller handbook. Great for the same reasons, but perhaps less useful as a quick reference because of its size.

It's a good, short book on the rules of music notation. It's not exhaustive, but a good beginning guide. It's also a bit too segmented by the use of alphabetical listings by short discussions of each topic. So, for example, a topic such as accidentals is scattered in different places: with single notes, in chords, use of courtesy accidentals, etc. I would prefer to see it all in one place, i.e. an entire chapter on accidentals. Doing it like that would require some overlapping of material from different chapters, but I can't hurt music students to be able to find the same information in any of several different places. But, on the whole, a good beginning book and an excellent value for the price.
