This scribe produces a clean scratch with a consistent width. It's beautiful to watch the diamond glide over glass under the microscope. Mine are being used for CNC lathe and milling, and the lifespan is way better than I was expecting in these applications. Being mounted on a steel wire there is some flex, but it makes tuning the contact between the diamond and substrate way more forgiving. The width of the scratch is pretty consistent across a range of pressures.That being said, I would not use this as a handheld scribe unless you have a very gentle touch.

Please be advised that the small tip on this scribe is very flexible, and certainly can't be used on anything more dense than a slice of bread.

This scribe is excellent for scribing and breaking small pieces of fused silica (e.g., .021" x .041" cross-section). A dip of the tip in mineral oil and a light, slow stroke produce a mark that gives a clean, repeatable break.
