Pine Needle Basket Making Coiling Tool - You can gauge/size your coils by hand but it's nice to have this helpful little tool.Note: The tube gauges also help me when using shorter pine needles and keeping the ends tidy.These are are great set of coil gauges. I have no complaints at all. They should last forever.Enjoy.

I appreciate the fact that these are made of solid brass. They have a nice rolled edge on the top, but the bottom has a sharp cut. Therefore, in order to use them comfortably, you will need to sand and smooth the rough and sharp edge, unless you want to end up with sore fingers after working with them for a while. It's a simple fix, but a bit tedious to do, and it would be very easy for the manufacturer to take care of instead!

Making pine straw baskets can be a little daunting. These brass collars make it a little easier to make even coils for your baskets. I have many pine trees and I try every couple of years to make baskets but usually end up frustrated. Hopefully, now that I have these it will enable me to make even bundles to stitch together. They are well made, and come in a variety of sizes. And, being metal, they are easy to clean and remove any pine pitch.

I am pleased with this set of 5 pine needle basket making gauges, made of thick, sturdy metal and seem like they would last forever. The metal looks like brass but, I can't verify that. They are sized at about 1.25"h x 1/4"w, 3/8"w, 1/2"w, 5/8"w, 3/4"w each. They have a few little rough spots on the ends that could be easily sanded off with fine grit sandpaper. One end of each is slightly flared to help easily accept more strands of pine straw. I have an example of a simple basket (pictured) that is still in wonderful condition that was made by my great grandmother born in 1800. I have been watching videos about this, always wanted and excited to try, this slow stitch basket making craft.

I never knew that these coiling tools were a thing. These 5 weaving gauges are made of brass and a good quality. They have heft. On one end is a small flange that allows for coiling the needles without breaking them. The lengths are uniform and can help in guiding the placement of stitching to whip stitch the coils together.I was remiss that the smallest coil gauge did not nest in the next largest, as the others do. It makes me wonder if the 4th coil gauge is not the correct size. So I took a star away for that.The interior for each gauge measures 3mm, 8mm, 11mm, 14mm, and 17mm (or 3/16", 1/4", 7/16". 9/16" and 5/8"), doesn't seem to have a set pattern to it. My tape measure only could measure up to a 16th of an inch and it looks like the product page lists measurements to the 64th of an inch. But OK.I am giving this item a 4-star review because the product delivers as described and is a good design for creating pine needle baskets. I've looked into getting a book on the topic after receiving this item. And after trying this out I'll return to report back how it goes.

These gauge guides for pine needle baskets really helped take my baskets to another level - having a wide range of sizes in a design gives a lovely feel to a basket.In general, these gauges are perfect for pine needle baskets. I had gotten some short pieces of pipe to feed needles through, but the flat wall at the end could catch needles and direct them outside the tube, bending them backward. These gauges have just a bit of a flare at the ends - it doesn't look like much, but it really helps guide all the pine needles through more easily and cleanly.The only thing I could possibly nitpick about this gauge set is that the smallest gauge doesn't fit into the pile of nested gauges. That has nothing to do with the functionality of them, and I store them in a container they all fit into, so having them nested isn't important.I'm really pleased to have these as a gauge upgrade from straws and pipe pieces!

I know a lot of people like to use cut up straws as gauges when basket weaving, but I like to have something with a bit more weight and more choice in width. The variety of sizes is perfect for me and gives me a lot more flexibility while keeping my work consistent and beautiful. They slide on easily and being solid, you can't overpack them like a straw gauge. It was an excellent purchase.
