Great value. Wanted a bigger spark than the little magnesium rectangles you get from budget camping lines. Sure got it from these little babies. Just use the included "multitool" striker (won't need a knife edges or anything like that). Striker has a kind of burr along one edge that grabs the ferorod sufficiently aggressively. Spark explodes off the end and dances around, hot and lively, easily igniting tinder. I've bought three of them now to give to grandkids as we explore how to make campfires together. They are delighted with them. And the tinder that is supplied? I usually just use dryer lint and have since I was 12 (50 years ago). But they include these little compressed cotton cylinders as well as some impregnated manilla rope strands. Tore off the tiniest bit of the white cotton and shredded it a bit. Great, resilient flame that stayed lit in the light breeze we had that day. Just kept burning. Nice value-added bit!

I spend a lot of time off the grid; I use this fire starter daily - it throws a great spark. It is trustworthy. When new they put on a protective black coating; once you scratch through that, it works perfectly. Even with my heavy daily use of this item, I figure it will last me a couple lifetimes, so I'll pass it on to my grandson ...... be good out there!

Affordable and no flaws yet. Taken it out backpacking 5 times and it's worked well every time (had a backup lighter still but this feels a lot more fun so I use it instead). One thing is the layer of paint or something on the outside of the rod needs to be scraped off so if it's your first time using it, it'll take a minute or two.Overall would recommend

This flit sparks really well, you can get some big sparks. You will need to shave off some of the black paint before you can actually get it to start sparking. I think it is a a good size, it is small but fits nicely in your survival kit. It feels durable and is easy to grip.
